I have never wanted you banned. Even the post you are alluding to I did not report the post. Get over yourself.

With that said, I don’t really want to risk clicking on a thread on a baseball forum and seeing something like that picture. Not just because of the image, but because I do not want it on my internet history.
What would you say.....ya do here?

I don’t care for that picture on here either and it’s certainly not a great thing for your internet history and I certainly will allow for you and others to judge that for yourself. It doesn’t belong here. It has shock value and I imagine it was partially used for that. Having said that (and not necessarily speaking to you) it is a pretty iconic photograph that is in many major news articles. Redszone is not the place for it but it’s not kiddie you-know-what. Otherwise NPR, Wikipedia and many others would be in trouble.

It was absolutely used as shock value, by a drunk. I frankly could not care less what the photo is from. It has absolutely no place here. None. This should not even be a debate. This is my favorite site on the internet and I have to echo Doug, I second-guessed coming here after seeing that picture. Rojo is clearly losing his mind and I have absolutely no idea what he is capable of posting on here.

I don't know how many deaths are due to lockdown. I don't think they're nothing, but I can't quantify it.

Anyhow I was going to post on this (maybe I even did) but I did some research and came across something interesting which is kind of common sense: stats rarely follow an orderly pattern. For example, if an ER averages 5 heart attacks per week, they may go two weeks with no heart attack and a week with 30. That's the non-orderly way life unfolds.

As baseball fans we've all noticed how a player will follow an MVP season with a "meh" season.

To Covid: the headline death number is sloppy. I would disregard it. But that's not because I don't think Covid has killed people. All-cause mortality is up over the previous five-year average. But by how much I'm not sure. We're an aging population, as is most of the countries with high mortality rates. And there's the "dry tinder" and "pull forward" phenomena.

Dry tinder means that if you've had abnormally low death rates for a couple of years -- say from a mild winter and low elderly death rates -- you're due for a "break out season". Sorry to be cruede.

Pull forward means that a pathogen is simply cutting short the lives of people who weren't long for this wold anyhow.

The result is that say we have a low-mortality winter, then a deadly couple of months and then another low-mortality winter, we're looking at something that's not quite an apocolypse.

Yes, I'm not in a hurry for our elders to leave us -- seeing another spring -- another wedding, another birthday, another grandchild -- should be a goal.

And I like to think there's a way of doing this without throwing away the lives of young people -- and old people.

And has anyone thought to ask how old people think about this? That seems lost as we decide what we're "doing for them".
This is a very thoughtful post. I don’t always agree with you but I encourage you to come from your point of view in this manner more often.

Maybe you are, maybe you're not, but it's become pretty clear that you might need to talk with someone. You've made a number of comments about your work situation, drinking, and struggles with family. Your rambling, machine-gunning late night posting projects that you have a deeply-rooted need to be heard and I'm concerned that's not happening for you right now. The now-deleted post really looks like a cry out for the kind of attention and empathy you're unlikely to get on an internet message board.

For real. In all seriousness. When you wake up tomorrow morning, ask yourself if doing what you've been doing has been working out and then maybe think about making a change or two.

The fact rojo hasn’t been banned because of it is pretty ****ed up IMHO. Should be a zero tolerance type of post.

He even said “I’m probably going to get banned...”
You are from the Midwest. You are much more conformist than most people. I remember when the Kim Phúc pic came out during the Vietnam war, and as horrible as it was, it was necessary. Nobody was perving on the girl, and the only people that would’ve been against printing it were the ones that said the National Guard was doing the right thing in the shooting of students at Kent State. Reality is yucky, and the board monitors can do whatever they want, but it isn’t like he was posting child porn. Get real.

I’m sure there are a couple of posters here that can post a nice cute sanitized meme to make it all better.

Doug isn't going to post here anymore because someone posted a Pulitzer Prize winning photo that appeared in the New York Times? I'm not really sure what the photo added to this conversation, but that's....a weird reason to go.

    Wow.

    I appreciate your concern.

Really, because I know it's sincere.

    Absolutely.

BTW, how's the Sturgis Death Apocolypse going?

That's not why he's doing it. He's doing it because the facts on the ground of Covid are turning against him.

I can think of many Pulitzer Prize winning photos that don’t belong on this Reds message board. Its pedigree is not the issue. The content is.

I think it’s an overreaction by Doug, but I understand his position. This message board has high standards and strict rules. This seems like a no-brainer to me considering the site rules.

I figured your intention was something along these lines, and it's why you weren't banned you for it despite your acknowledgement you could be. Instead, I simply deleted the picture as soon as I saw the reported posts. As long as it's completely understood that we don't ever want anything like that to be posted on this site again, I'm fine sticking with that decision.

This site has stricter rules on content than the NYT? I guess this is the message board of record!

    It's a goofy reaction.
