Said it a while back and I'll repeat it again.

Less lockdown input from people whose checks are safe and jobs are secure and more from those who live check to check and have no job security. If you get paid either way your opinion on lockdowns is not that important. It's those who have to go to work who matter here.

The word lockdown seems to have become the latest boogeyman for some folks. First, we never truly went into a lockdown and very few are proposing a true lockdown now. Second, seems to me there's a way to do this sensibily. Enforcing the mask mandates. No large gatherings, especially indoors. Very limited indoor dining and bar service. Ramping up testing and PPE production, especially for those most vulnerable and essential workers. Federal leaders getting their act together and passing another relief bill so folks and small businesses can hang on for the next few months.

There's a blueprint from other countries on how to do this pretty successfully now and we shouldn't be afraid to follow their lead.
"In our sundown perambulations of late, through the outer parts of Brooklyn, we have observed several parties of youngsters playing 'base', a certain game of ball. Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our close rooms, the game of ball is glorious"

The answer is the same today as it was in March, but "we" just couldn't do it.

Pay people to stay home. Full stop.

“But muh beer at a bar!”

Nobody is saying just lock everything down. You know that. Its shut down non-essential businesses and provide unemployment to those effected until it’s under control and we are rolling out a vaccine. I get it, we’ve got to be able to sit at a bar and watch football. That is extremely essential for living.

As for your protests “point” - yeah, that one thing is why Americans aren’t going to follow government lockdown rules. Right. No other reason you are upset about the protests over a black man and woman being murdered by the police. Right.

Good thing we only have 70 million obese people in the U.S.

If I remember right, for ten weeks in spring no one was sitting in bars and restaurants. There were no sports. We did everything the government asked, and millions didn't get a unemployment or a stimulus check. Things were under control, but then the government allowed things like schools, Kings Island, casinos, school stadiums, etc, to reopen. Many of us were against that, but here we are. So please spare us of the righteous indignation of "But muh beer at a bar". I realize that Cleveland isn't exactly that forward thinking, but down here they have done exactly what was recommended, and you will find that the rise in cases is not connected to bars- it is connected to schools and private events.

But yeah, close them all down again, because you can be sure there will still be plenty of desperate poor people who will still show up to work and prepare your takeout food for you. You know, because that's essential.

And please, you should know that unemployment doesn't do squat if you are running a business, and the US has the highest percentage of private business owners in the world. If your overhead is ten grand a month and you have to cease business, that cost doesn't go away. I swear, everyone should be forced to take a course in basic business in high school. There was even a guy here that criticized First Watch's business plan because they couldn't survive selling takeout scrambled eggs.

Yeah, we should probably start thinking about doing something about that.

What experts have been warning us about since March is starting to happen. It's almost like they knew exactly what would happen if we didn't listen to what they said, and, well, too many people simply didn't.

We are... in a morbidly effective but morally bankrupt manner.

There really shouldn’t be much debate. Everything the experts said would happen, happened. If we had followed their advice, much of it would have been avoided.

We were told there would be a second wave this winter. It is happening. Maybe this time we can listen to the scientists and do what they recommend.

Well, there were plenty of reasons not to be obese before covid. I mean, just for starters, it would prevent heat disease, stroke, amputations, blindness, diabetes, hip and knee replacements, and a dick that stops working.

I think I was very clear that the only way it would work is if the workers were guaranteed unemployment. Obviously just taking a bunch of peoples income away with no safety net is not a solution. I mean, I think it’s pretty clear I was saying this in the post you quoted. It’s like the 2nd sentence.

As for your point about private events and schools but it definitely doesn’t get spread at bars and restaurants. I still think there is absolutely no way to prove that. It’s getting tracked at private events and schools because everyone knows each other and someone tests positive and then calls their family or school and says “hey, I tested positive” and then they know everyone at the school or private event that catches it caught it from that person. I find it highly unlikely Bob is testing positive for COVID and then called Jimmy’s Pub he was at 3 days prior and saying “hey, I tested positive, you should find every single stranger in that bar that night and have them get tested.”

Not all workers are eligible for unemployment, and it doesn't address sole proprietors who have fixed overhead. Many workers in certain industries were specifically excluded from benefits. We have an inordinate number of people who work for themselves because it's in our DNA, for better or worse.

I have not been to a private event or home since March. The only places I have been since then are bars and restaurants. The only people I know who tested positive are my friend's dad who caught it in the hospital and the group of five people I mentioned before that caught it it work. You can surmise that the spread is coming from bars, but if it is, wouldn't I or one of my friends have it? Wouldn't I know at least one person connected to a bar that has it? If I'm sitting with a friend watching the game and I'm ten feet from everyone else and there is commercial ventilation in the building and the employees are sanitizing and wearing masks, I'm safer than if I was watching the game at his house.

Also, if you look at countries that are trying to do some contact tracing, they are coming to the conclusion that they don't know where the cases are coming from at all. It's chaos. Germany, in the middle of a big spike, says they have no idea where 75% of the cases came from. Since they at least have some control over public places, the bulk is coming from private gatherings that they can't get a handle on.

Re: COVID-19 Part IX -Vaccine Time

I thought this column summarized the current predicament quite well:

The best way to prepare would have been to enter this phase with as few cases as possible. In exponential processes like epidemics, the baseline matters a great deal. Once the numbers are this large, it’s very easy for them to get much larger, very quickly—and they will. When we start with half a million confirmed cases a week, as we had in mid-October, it’s like a runaway train. Only a few weeks later, we are already at about 1 million cases a week, with no sign of slowing down.
