The Decline Of Black Catchers In MLB

Baseball’s Dearth of Black Catchers Helps Explain Its Dearth of Black Managers
Former catchers hold about a third of MLB’s managing jobs. But there hasn’t been a Black everyday catcher in baseball in nearly two decades.

Off the top of my head, the only African-American catchers I can recall playing for the Reds are Hal King, Lloyd McClendon, and Terry McGriff. (And McClendon was more of a C/1B/3B/OF utility guy with a little bit of pop in his bat.)
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman. Damn glad to meet ya.

I remember the days of Johnny Roseboro, Earl Battey, Elston Howard.

Did the author overlook Russell Martin because he is biracial, or because he is Canadian?

Thanks. In the part that was available without a subscription, there was no mention of him. That part of the article also mentioned that there had been no black starting catchers in nearly two decades, though Martin had been a regular as recently as 2016 with the Blue Jays.

I think the author was focusing on African American Everyday Catchers in the article.

Former Reds catcher Terry McGriff is Charles Johnson's uncle.

Most black mlb players aren't African American they're mostly Dominican Cuban Puerto Rican or Mexican, most African American athletes prefer to play basketball or football It's not anyone's fault that most of the Dominican CubanPuertoo Ricanand Mexicancatchersdon'look as black as players from those places that play other positions

Me too. Saw him go 4-4 with 2 HRs in a AA game for the Portland Sea Dogs, and liked him ever since.
    Go BLUE!!!
