Not a fan of targeting him at all. For one, he won't be cheap in terms of prospects. Second, he's the exact opposite of what this team needs. No more free swinging, high slugging, swing as hard as you can every damn time types. This team has plenty of them already. Give me a patient, work the count, high OBP type.

If I target anyone from Chicago it's Bryant, and I play him in LF.

Keep in mind that most scouts from BA and other publications would be working for an MLB team if they were good enough...

    1. I wouldn’t assume successful baseball writers/analysts, working for these publications, necessarily want to be team scouts.

    2. The views of these writers/analysts reflect, in part, what they are told by others in the industry. So demeaning the writers as not “good enough” doesn’t go very far.

I'm not against the idea of Bryant in the OF (though he's probably a better defender at 3B than Suarez, so maybe Suarez to the OF). That would put guys who were 3B in all three OF positions, 2B and 3B along with a DH at 1B and nobody at SS.

Reading all the pre-draft stories, Greene was considered to be a once-in-a-generation pitcher, who was as close to a “can’t miss” pick as a team could get. The Reds picked him, and suddenly the kid came with all these question marks. My guess is that if another team - the Dodgers, Astros, etc. - picked Greene, he would be at the top of prospect lists - even with the injury.

Part of that is obviously due to the Reds’ poor reputation for developing talent. I am not sure that the organization has missed on so many draft picks as they have not developed them properly. All the recent picks since Senzel have been good picks. I would question the ability to develop them from good picks to solid players. Evidently, many of the national prospect gurus question the Reds’ ability as well. Hopefully the recent overhaul of the development side will pay off.
This is a fair point. And it may impact lesser known prospects like Garcia more than others.

The issue here is (or was) the Reds’ approach to filling shortstop. Should the Reds limit their search to short-term guys because of Garcia’s presence?

With the Reds now actively vying for the playoffs, I’d go to three years for Didi. Garcia is good but not a sure-shot. And if he pans out, then you adjust.

Re: Nick Krall: Shortstop, Pitching Are Reds' Priorities

Some factors that need to be considered besides how highly ranked is the prospect is include whether the team is trying to contend or not and whether the free agent may fill other needs beside just filling the particular position.

    In the Reds case:

    1. They are trying to win, so a question mark who may develop in a few years seems the wrong answer. They need an established player whose production is more bankable.
    2. The Reds are pretty lopsided with low speed, poor defense, low contact power guys and need some skillset diversity in their main producers. That would suggest an established performer with those skills as a opposed to a question mark.
    3. Players from winning teams are needed to try to help change the losing culture that has developed in Cincinnati through its in house guys being developed during a tanking period and it's player acquired mostly being guys who came from losing teams.

Finally, it is not that Garcia is a top 10 prospect in baseball who you would hand a job to. He showed some impressive defense in his time here and can obviously handle the position defensively (so can Alfredo Rodriguez BTW), but he's no sure thing to hold down the job or to ever actually be anything more than a defensive specialist. At this point he's a guy who should be left cooking in the minors until he is ready and we really have no idea when that will be - if ever. I'd fix my big league team, that has lots of issues that need addressed, and worry about Garcia's arrival when it happens. IMO, I think Didi Gregorius is a perfect fit to address much of what ails this roster (but adding him is not the only thing they need to do). I certainly don't let some kid from A Ball who showed a glove when pressed into service by inadequacies on the big league roster stand in the way.

If this team was built properly, it is in need of two middle infielders. It's likely that Castellanos opts out after 2021 and the merry go round begins with Winker taking an OF spot, 38 year old Joey Votto becoming a DH and the Corner Infielder turned second baseman moves back down the defensive spectrum where he belongs. There will be room for both Didi (or whoever) and Garcia as soon as 2022. IMO, the bigger question is whether Garcia will be ready to take one of those spots. Signing Didi or somebody else for SS is a no brainer IMO. If it takes a multi-year deal, so be it. By 2022, Didi will be 32 and a move to 2B might be called for anyway. Having too many capable position players for the middle of the diamond is the absolute least of this team's problem. Right now they don't really have any who are certain every day players who should play up the middle. They have a converted 3B playing second and will be exposed if there is no longer a shift to cover him and a 3B prospect in CF who still hasn't really hit and is injury prone. They have a former CF who is in his mid 30s who is passable in CF but better in a corner and there are no every day players for SS in sight. Worrying about remote far off problems while the current situation is somewhat dire seems completely insane to me. This is like a starving beggar saying he doesn't want a job because he doesn't know what he'll do with all the money.

Oh, I agree. I would try to sign DiDi for at least two years, and three years may be even better. I am pretty convinced that Garcia is at least two years away. And as I and others have said, you can slide DiDi to 2B if Garcia works out.

I don’t want to judge Garcia at all on 2020 numbers. I don’t think he should have been on the field for the Reds at all this season. He appeared to handle A+ ball well, but he should have been facing AA pitching an not major league pitching this year. I hope it wasn’t a mistake to push him, no matter how tantalizing he looked in spring training.

Reds should target Ian Happ instead. Play him at 2nd, Moose at 1st, with Joey as DH.

If they did that it might be better to just put him in LF and let Winker DH, because I don’t think you can play Castellanos and Winker in the same OF at the same time.

There's the rub. I don't think you should play Votto and Moustakas on the same side of the infield either. I'd rather have a strong infield than a strong outfield. It depends on the shift. If the shift is still legal, Moose at 2B might pass, if not, get him off of there.

Even if we grant that Votto is toast at 1B, Moose is basically exactly neutral as a 2B by every metric. That’s nowhere near the problem of having 2 DHs in the outfield at the same time.

Moose was covered by having a third guy playing on that side of the IF against every LH hitter. Those hits will start flowing if there is no more shift.

I agree about the OF. It's why I think one of these guys should be traded and a player who fits better should be signed. I'm still for dealing Castellanos and putting his money towards a real all around player.

Krall is refreshingly direct. The Reds want a SS. Hopefully they want more, but there's roughly six shortstops out there who'd do the trick.

I wish they'd trade Castellanos, it'd solve a lot of problems with this team. I don't think there's a single team out there who would bite, but I thought the same about Iglesias a few weeks ago.

My gut tells me that Krall will spend most of the remaining budget on a SS and trade Winker for salary-neutral pitching help. I think Winker should bring back an equally promising-with-warts pitcher with a couple years of control.

I'd rather they trade Cast as a salary dump, give Wink more reps in the OF (allowing JV to DH more and giving the entire team more defensive flex) and sign a cheaper true RF (if that exists). Maybe dangle AA for some relief help.
