    Phillies hire Cotham

With hiring Caleb Cotham are the Phillies trying to gain upper hand in the Bauer sweepstakes this off season?

I look at this as a positive. The Reds actually had someone in their organization that was coveted by another team. When is the last time someone from the Reds left to get a promotion elsewhere? That's progress.

Donnie Ecker was very good at what he did also. Very bright, young, super well versed in using new age technology and hitting theory.

    Same mold as Caleb

In case it hasn’t been noted he is taking over for the newly retired Bryan Price, who is obviously set for life with that sweet Cincinnati money.

    Re: Phillies hire Cotham

“I think I learned as much from him as what he learned from me,” Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson said by phone. “Frankly, [as] someone who’s been coaching for a long time, a lot has changed from where we started to where we’re at right now. He introduced me to a lot. He taught me a lot about the importance of it, and then also what we could use.”

Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer, a longtime Driveline Baseball devotee. Bauer credited Cotham for tapping into Statcast data and using high-tech tools to contribute to his dominance (1.73 ERA, 36% strikeout rate in 73 innings) this season.

“I haven’t really had that situation before, where I have someone that I respect in the technological standpoint, the really nitty-gritty pitch-shaping and understanding the mechanics and how the ball was moving,” Bauer told reporters last month. “It was good to have someone to bounce those ideas off of and have those conversations.”

Donnie Ecker last year from the same position as Cotham, but on the hitting side. Was hired by the Giants as Hitting Coach.
