Reds are saying they needed salary room to add players. I know many are skeptical.

    Let’s see.

If they sign Gregorius that would alleviate some concern. It would be a reasonable baseball decision to remove some non- core players to make him affordable.

But if they shop only for the cheapest assets now, or make trades strictly to eliminate more salary, it would be a sad outcome.

Presumably they will begin the addition part of the off-season shortly.

With a potential nontender looming? Most teams play wait it out.

This one stings a bit because it makes no sense.

So far none of these have won an MVP or Cy Young. Trammell and Downs have the most upside. Time will tell.

If Gregorius and Bauer are signed I wonder how much fuss will be around Reds Country.

    None, I'd wager.

But so far, the Reds have given up (for nothing):

    - A cheap, productive 800 OPS catcher

    - A league average CF

    - One of the best relief arms on the market

Bullpen was an issue last year. Trade two prospects worth very little (and I could argue JVM was addition by subtraction) to help shore up the bullpen. Get 8 innings out of the reliever. 3 months later cut him? What?

This screams Krall trying very hard to be the smartest guy in the room to me.

Bradley was probably going to make $8M or so, IIRC Brad Hand was set to make around $10M and had no takers.
"Today was the byproduct of us thinking we can come back from anything." - Joey Votto after blowing a 10-1 lead and holding on for the 12-11 win on 8/25/2010.

Lets not twist things around to fit the narrative. I like Casali and all but he is a part-time catcher who hits lefties well but not a "800 OPS catcher". Tucker signed that multi-year extension so the Reds are stuck with his money, thus Casali had to go to make room for Stephenson. We did not give up a league average centerfielder.

I think that is what he made last year, so I was estimating a arbitration bump.

Yes, it would absolutely suck if some of these guys blew up and became quality players at the MLB level. It's not really where they end up though, but what their value was when they were traded.

Bottom line, the Reds have given up a decent amount of prospect value the past 4-5 years and have nothing to show for it. That's not good when you're a team that isn't going to build through free agency.

On the bright side we aren’t Rockies fans.

    How do you cut Dahl?

The one thing to watch out for here is a trade of a main player earning meaningful salary.

Reds have now made the “easy” cuts. Players whose contracts were over (FAs) or could just be let go (non-tenders).

But to cut more they’d have to trade a contract.

Suarez and Gray would appear most valuable chips since their deals are team friendly. Castellanos and Moustakas might save more money but maybe too rich for trading teams. Votto contract not movable at this point. Iglesias would be meaningful for 2021, but they just non-tendered Bradley.

I don’t think they are dumb enough to move Gray.

I have a feeling Suarez is going to get traded. Which bums me out, I love Suarez and think he’s going to bounce back in a major way in 2021. Moose is going to end up being an albatross signing. Didn’t want to admit it at the time, but it’s looking like it.

They didn't want to pay a guy who struggles to play ball games because of injury?

He’s 27, was an all-star in 2019, and was going to make $2.5 million next year. At the very minimum you keep him and trade him at the deadline. $2.5 million is nothing.
