    Best Talking Heads Song

I love Talking Heads. I feel like this changes for me every couple of years. For awhile it was Flowers. Recently I have been listening to This is the Place very often and it’s just perfect IMHO.

Here’s a really cool version of it from 2012:

Part of one of the truly great “Side A’s” of all time on Remain in Light.

Big picture, I think it is This Must Be the Place. But, if I listen to any of the first 4-5 albums, I’ll hear something that will make me say “No. This is their best song.”

It's probably This Must Be The Place yeah, but I have to say even though it's the big single and too obvious I really do love Burning Down The House so much.

I've watched Stop Making Sense at least 10x this year. I just assume there were buckets of cocaine backstage like the chalk buckets you see at weightlifting gyms.

    “Born Under Punches.”

    Still sounds brand new

    “Mind” a close second.

“Found a Job” an even closer third.

Great idea for a thread! I have seen the Talking heads live a number of times in the 70s and 80s and they are the best live band ever. David Byrne might be one of the most intelligent and thoughtful people in popular music, and Brian Eno is another one. Their collaboration on 3 talking head albums are the highlight of the talking heads oeuvre for me.

Early naive David/talking heads song favorites. - the very first single - love/ building on fire is amazing. “I’ve got two loves, and they go tweet, tweet, tweet like little birds”. Stay hungry from the 2nd album and don’t worry about the government.

Crosseyed and painless and once in a lifetime from Remain in Light, their last album with Eno and the start of their fame.
wordy rapping hood and genius of love by the Tom Tom club (only Tina and chris and Adrian Belew but they were so good they made David jealous).

Road to nowhere is my favorite of the mature David/THeads.

Saw him perform this song with the THeads with a set of solos for a version that was at least 15 minutes, maybe 20. Wish I had seen him with King Crimson around that time with Robert Fripp as another guitarist and Bill Bruford on drums.

Road to Nowhere was my pick that I couldn’t bring myself to put in writing. Talking Heads is a great band - not my favorite by any stretch (not putting them down at all saying that) but they really made the “pick your favorite” a tough question.

And to add - I can be snobbish when hearing the “favorite songs” of others because I tend to roll my eyes when they name “the big hit.” But even the hits hold up for The Talking Heads, they are that innovative. “Burning Down the House” is probably the one that I never really dug.

So do I. Popular as it was/is, It's definitely in my top 5.

37 years later, that Keyboard/synth solo during the final minute or so of the song still hooks me every time.

As for my top Talking Heads song, if I have to choose only one, it's (Nothing But) Flowers - A brilliant modern day life satire that's as relevant today (if not more) as the day the song was released in '88.

And tying this song in with another brilliant Talking Heads track that's been mentioned in this thread, I distinctly remember a Two-Fer Tuesday double-shot of Talking Heads from my local AOR radio station back in the day - when Nothing But Flowers was at it's peak, and lead off the set. Anyway, the second of the two-fer was This Must Be The Place. Oddly, and sadly enough, I'm positive that day in '88 was the last time I heard This Must Be The Place on terrestrial radio.

Thank God for Satellite Radio, as well as Spotify.

Similar to R.E.M. for me. You have the “cooler” favorite albums like Murmur or Document (or my less popular pick of New Adventures in Hi-Fi) but anyone honest has to admit that Automatic for the People is their best record, despite its popularity and obviousness and despite occuring after their more punk/indie/energetic/artsy phase.

No idea what the best is, but my favorite TH song is "And She Was"
