Owners, want players to be vaccinated before spring training

Major League Baseball executives and owners, wanting players to be vaccinated before arriving to spring training, would like the 2021 season to be delayed until May, even if it means shortening the season to 140 or fewer games.

The Major League Baseball Players Association, believing it proved a year ago that teams can safely adapt to protocols, wants the season to start on time, playing all 162 games with full pay.

And here we are, with just two months before pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report for spring training, and no one has any idea what will happen.

To be fair, most employers are going to want proof of employee vaccination prior to returning to the worksite.

The players appear to be ok with a delayed start but they want to play a full season and extend it past the end of September. The owners want another truncated season and end it at the regular time. It really appears to me that the owners view of heaven would be to get $$ without playing any games.

The players would be wise to agree to get vaccinated, but insist they get full pay. Make it the owners' problem. You've got swimming pools filled with cash and every connection in the universe. Wrangle up the vaccines.

Not all though. Chase and Nationwide called their people back to the office back in August or so. Of course, the people that can't work from home have been at work the entire time.

I think the players have a point here. It was safe for them to play under the specified conditions last season. Why can't they play under those same conditions until the vaccine happens ? Oh yea, because the owners probably want to reduce the number of games played to help their bottom line again. It's kind of laughable to think the owners care about the players' health and safety. History shows otherwise

Baseball players are essential workers, they'll get their shots. Place them between teachers and grocery workers.

Assuming J&J and astrazeneca are approved in january, the delay will not be overly long. Hopefully the players can be prudent and the owners less cheap.

Can't make it a requirement until it a vaccine gets full approval which will take much longer. These current vaccines are only authorized for emergency use which is drastically different.

The smart move would be moving the season start date out to May 1. I think by that time you will be able to have stadiums half full at least.

But, you should still be able to play 162. Add in a few double-headers and play until early November. It seems doable. There have been years when games didn't start until around April 7 and they got in 162. An extra 3 weeks shouldn't kill them.

Re: Owners, want players to be vaccinated before spring training

Until reading this post I had gone on assuming/hoping that we'd have a regular season, no restrictions, and that MLB and all sports in general would see a huge rise in attendance from 2019, as the hunger for social gatherings will be strong.

But after reading this thread I don't think there is any way that will all happen.

I thought Opening Day for MLB would be the perfect event to essentially reopen America. I am happy the vaccine is now being administered, hopefully in a month or two we are seeing the cases and death rapidly declining.

Perhaps no proof of vaccine needed for many workplaces, but ticketmaster wants to attend an event.

You'd know this from your line of work, but is this likely to have an effect on business insurance or employee health premiums? Seems like the sort of thing that would affect actuarial tables.

The union’s position has remained unchanged. The players are planning for a 162-game season and plan to show up to spring training on time.

“To be clear, and as we’ve made clear to the league, players are planning on showing up for spring training on time for a full 162-game season as set forth in the CBA and the league’s previously-issued schedule” Bruce Meyer MLBPA's senior director of collective bargaining said in a statement Tuesday.

You have posited a very rational position. I’m skeptical that rational behavior will prevail.
