Turn Back The Clock
Dwight Howard leads an incredible comeback by the Embiid-less Sixers against the Pacers, from down 16 with about 5 minutes left to a win by 9. He got a lot of help from Thybulle and Korkmaz over the final five minutes.

It's like picking the All-Stars based on Spring Training and April games in baseball or the Kentucky Derby before they've made the first turn or even the NFL playoffs after September games, but here's my Starting Five for the West:
The MVP: Mike Conley
So much was focused on his shooting because of how terrible it became that all other parts of his game were forgotten about. Now that his shooting has leveled off, the best parts of his game have come forward, his leadership and his do-whatever-it-takes attitude to get the win. His play-making has removed all pressure from Ingles so Ingles can be the best of himself...a quiet player who can get the hockey assist, light up the other three from deep for six quick points that changes momentum or breaks their backs, or apply pressure defensively without worrying about getting in foul trouble because he's needed on the floor. He can spread the Offense as an outlet pass for drives to the hoop or room to run the pick-and roll. Conley takes a ton of pressure off Mitchell so he can be a top scorer in the league without having to do everything on Offense for the team to win. MC takes pressure off of Royce O'Neal, so he can be the best sub he can be. O'Neal can play off-Guard or make the extra pass. With Conley, the Utah Offense flows. And, of course, Conley takes Gobert's game to the best it can be.
Also getting in from UTA is Gobert. In a league where nobody is playing any Defense, yet, except for UTA, LAC and the LAL, Gobert is the best of them all. This is no slight on Mitchell (he's the one they can surely count on come playoff time) that he's third best for UTA to me, it's just that he's just a touch less important so far than Conley and Gobert.
The LAC get two, PG and Leonard. They have been outstanding.
Finishing out the West is James. He's still the best player in the league, and as difficult as it must be to find a reason to be motivated, he's managed to do it. His best this season will come in the playoffs, as will Leonard's. The other three have major questionmarks in that area, but this isn't about that, but about what's happening so far.

Rivers went to an attacking/ ball pressure zone defense in the 4th quarter that completely befuddled the Pacers. It wasn't so much a matter of Indiana blowing the game; It was a matter of the much-deserved 76ers winning the game. It was no fluke.

You were right about Hood, M2. He's still struggling, even after these four games since the two practices. Still expecting quick improvement though because his Offensive game doesn't rely on a lot that would be diminished from coming back from the Achille's tear. Defensively, of course, this will be a problem, especially when in the same lineup as Giles and Simons and Anthony. That's a very bad Defensive foursome. Working out combinations is going to take time. If DJJ continues to be hurt all the time, and there's certainly good reason to believe this will be true, then perhaps he can improve the 2nd Unit by playing limited minutes all the time while Little continues to Start. (Hiding Little's inexperience and growing moments among the Starters while taking advantage of his fiery efforts and hustle to infuse the Starters in that area instead of placing him with Anthony, Giles, Hood and Simons might limit some damage while C.J., Collins and Nurk remain out for the next two months. DJJ would at least make that foursome not quite as bad, though still bad at the moment, than if Little would be part of that.)

Yeah, Quickley's pretty likeable.

Putting Simmons and Thybulle together at the top of that zone was brilliant. I am henceforth calling that zone configuration the "Temporal Pincer", which only makes sense to those who've seen Tenet three times and then watch it streamed backwards to the start of the first viewing.
Something else that got lost in last night's fourth quarter shuffle is that Seth Curry and Danny Green sat for all but 25 seconds of it, combined.

Digging through some ESPN RPM #'s recently. I know some people consider them a gold standard of individual player metrics, but I have always had doubts because I simply do not trust the DRPI element of the calculation. How do you view RPI in defining the most impactful players?

In the last 25 seasons, teams are now 9-23,498 when trailing by 5+ in the final 10 seconds of the game. However, it's the 2nd straight day this type of comeback has happened (POR at CHI on Saturday).

Or if you'd like a less dubiously calculated O-Rating, he ranks 396th with a ORtg of 93. https://www.basketball-reference.com..._per_poss.html
And here's his RPM numbers, a stat you've touted in the past - http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/r...e/11/sort/ORPM. Covington ranks 410th in ORPM at -3.38, dragging him down to a -1.58 overal RPM.

I'm not a system player. I am a system.
Sure, but beyond that actual facts, Covington is a star. It's only a matter of time until he breaks through like he's already broken through. He only needs a couple more practices, then he's sure to be a completely different player that he's already well on his way to being and has been since he was traded for. If you can't follow that logic, then it's obvious that you're hopeless as a would-be analyst.
