Padres got their guy - a bidder gone

The Padres have signed Blake Snell. They seem to have given up a load of prospects. So they aren't going to be asking for either of our guys or competing with those who do. The best outcome is we don't trade. The worst outcome is we trade anyway and get nothing of real value or even high ceiling. Which?

The best outcome is you strike when the iron is hot and San Diego was where the iron was hot.

If they had a chance to trade Gray to San Diego, they should have taken it. Because the Reds are not going anywhere until they get some salary relief from Votto's contract unless they UP the payroll significantly and that doesn't seem to be happening

The Padres got their man. Gray would have been their fall back position.

Before you become too enamored with the Padres, just remember how many years of futility and front office turnover it took before they got to where they are now.

Some teams are good at trading to keep salary in line. They turn salary dumps into good baseball trades.

The formula: Trade player while valuable before you absolutely must. Get salary relief AND good prospects. And then (maybe) reinvest the savings in other players.

This is different from a salary dump out of desperation. That formula: Trade a player when under financial pressure. Get salary relief but little player return. Then (maybe) reinvest.

Which is precisely what they would be doing if they traded away Gray, Castillo, or Suarez. Precisely. Reds fans just do not have the stomach for it or would rather cry “woe is me” no matter the situation.

Except Reds’ pitching staff has already been diluted in salary dumps and unsigned FAs with little return. So while, yes, they are now looking for the better type trade, it may not be so easy to unscramble the eggs.

Plus, if Reds are desperate enough, the next round of trades may not turn out much better. Hopefully they won’t go that route.

Simultaneously whining about Votto's contract, while whining that the Reds won't sign Bauer long term, while whining about the possibility of trading guys away rather than paying them a lot of money to stay forever. Throw in whining that the Reds are willing to let some role-players go instead of giving them raises. All while wanting them to run more like CLE/TAM.

All of these are contradictory viewpoints in my mind.

Yes, These people should just shut up and rest on the Reds’ great success of recent years.

The major difference is that those organizations at least seem to have a plan. The Reds can't make up their mind what they want to be and have no semblance of a long-term strategy.

IMO, most of that has to do with ownership. They wanted a superstar to market (Votto), but then didn't want to spend the money to build around him when he was the best player in baseball not named Mike Trout. They didn't want to trade away guys when they should've because the owner "liked" them, feared declining ticket sales, etc. Forcing the Chapman trade was a no-win situation that will continue to haunt the organization for the next decade too.

It's not necessarily the same people saying all of these things at the same time.

Padres "deep into" talks for Yu Darvish.

Despite last night’s agreement to acquire Blake Snell from the Rays, the Cubs are also “deep” in talks on a trade that would send Yu Darvish from Chicago to San Diego, according to Dennis Lin, Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic (Twitter link). R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports first indicated that the Padres were still in the mix for Darvish even after landing Snell.

I think it's a great winning blueprint for a small market team but some Reds fans are probably assuming the Reds front office isn't competent enough to execute a blueprint of that level of difficulty.

If Snell and Darvish are getting dealt, that would tell me that Gray is not on the trading block. Otherwise, we would be hearing rumors about him as well.
