How could they not?
MLB teams appear to get 30%+ of their revenue in-stadium. How much of that will they get in 2021? And how are they going to pay their operating costs in the meantime?
I would not be surprised if a socially-distanced Opening Day costs the Reds more in 2021 than Noe Ramirez.
Oh, I'm sure that the Reds have listened on some players and made calls on others. The "Reds actively shopping Gray" headline never made sense from a Reds source or Reds perspective, though. And keep in mind that whatever sources put that out there apparently were surprised by the Iglesias trade, which had no prior publicity.

I can see both sides on this.
On the one side, yep, billionaires suck and can afford to throw millions at a baseball team.
On the other side, it’s financially dumb to throw money at a baseball team when they didn’t make any money last year through ticket sales/concessions and are unlikely to do so next year either.
It’s kind of funny because the it’s just operations as usual for the Rays.
What would you say.....ya do here?
It’s just the kind of short term, maximize profits at all cost thinking that has ruined sports and uh, also kind of the rest of the world. They are undoubtedly taking a hit this year and for part of next year, but ticket sales and in person concessions etc are only part of their profits. They still have extremely lucrative broadcasting rights and merchandising sales to ride off of. They also can scale back most of their stadium operations too, which saves money.
Meanwhile, cratering the team and payroll to minimize the losses in 2020 is probably also going to rob them of future rebounds when people are allowed back in stadiums sometime late this spring or early summer. If the Reds had punted Gray and Suarez or whatever, GABP would’ve been a ghost town. If they keep trying to build the team, they probably will get a steady stream of people through the gates.

Look, I know that caviling against cheapskate owners has been a trope since Harry Frazee wanted to produce No, No Nanette, and probably before. But this rant has no basis in the Reds' recent reality whatsoever.
The Reds OD payroll in 2019 was 80 million dollars more than the Rays. It was 63 million dollars more than the Padres. It was more than the Braves or White Sox or Blue Jays or a dozen other teams. If there is one thing that the Reds did not do in 2019, it was "maximize short term profits." I'm using 2019 to avoid the covid season - but feel free to look at 2020 numbers if you prefer, the big picture is the same.
2019
2020
The Reds can be faulted for a lot of things. Skimping on payroll to "maximize profits at all cost" is not one of them. At least not in any economically sensible world.
