This season presents a really rare opportunity for perennial also rans (or in the case of the Reds, also suckeds) to be real players in the market while most of the other teams are trying to recoup lost profits (NOT lost money) from Covidball 2020.

I hope it works out. I love outside the box thinking and wish the Reds engaged in it successfully now and again.
Agreed, it was only a matter of time before some started thinking beyond this next year. If I was as seller I would be in no rush to unload anyone. The selling market could look a hell of a lot different come June.

Depends on what you are looking for. Darvish and Snell definitely have things to offer to the acquiring team that Gray doesn't.
Look at their contracts. It’s really not that close. Gray is the clearly the best deal.

That summarizes what I’ve been saying on here. But I guess some teams feel financial pressure to sell right now.

Hoping Reds hold steady at this point. They are still good enough to be decent and shouldn’t destroy what they’ve built so far. Wait for a better market.

    Agree with this.

Moreover, think it's reasonably likely that "Reds interested in trading Gray" rumors were started/planted by the Padres (or some other team looking at Snell or others) to lower the prospect cost of those acquisitions.

I’d guess Reds have been floating Gray, Suarez, Moose around. Looking for another cost cutting deal. But doubt Reds will do another salary dump, will look for a good return of less expensive players. Probably willing to walk away if necessary.

    How could they not?

MLB teams appear to get 30%+ of their revenue in-stadium. How much of that will they get in 2021? And how are they going to pay their operating costs in the meantime?

I would not be surprised if a socially-distanced Opening Day costs the Reds more in 2021 than Noe Ramirez.

Some teams can withstand it better than others. In Reds case their timing was terrible (not their fault). They signed Moose and Cast in December and January; then in March the COVID roof fell in.

Oh, I'm sure that the Reds have listened on some players and made calls on others. The "Reds actively shopping Gray" headline never made sense from a Reds source or Reds perspective, though. And keep in mind that whatever sources put that out there apparently were surprised by the Iglesias trade, which had no prior publicity.

I can see both sides on this.

On the one side, yep, billionaires suck and can afford to throw millions at a baseball team.

On the other side, it’s financially dumb to throw money at a baseball team when they didn’t make any money last year through ticket sales/concessions and are unlikely to do so next year either.

It’s kind of funny because the it’s just operations as usual for the Rays.
What would you say.....ya do here?

It’s just the kind of short term, maximize profits at all cost thinking that has ruined sports and uh, also kind of the rest of the world. They are undoubtedly taking a hit this year and for part of next year, but ticket sales and in person concessions etc are only part of their profits. They still have extremely lucrative broadcasting rights and merchandising sales to ride off of. They also can scale back most of their stadium operations too, which saves money.

Meanwhile, cratering the team and payroll to minimize the losses in 2020 is probably also going to rob them of future rebounds when people are allowed back in stadiums sometime late this spring or early summer. If the Reds had punted Gray and Suarez or whatever, GABP would’ve been a ghost town. If they keep trying to build the team, they probably will get a steady stream of people through the gates.

Look, I know that caviling against cheapskate owners has been a trope since Harry Frazee wanted to produce No, No Nanette, and probably before. But this rant has no basis in the Reds' recent reality whatsoever.

The Reds OD payroll in 2019 was 80 million dollars more than the Rays. It was 63 million dollars more than the Padres. It was more than the Braves or White Sox or Blue Jays or a dozen other teams. If there is one thing that the Reds did not do in 2019, it was "maximize short term profits." I'm using 2019 to avoid the covid season - but feel free to look at 2020 numbers if you prefer, the big picture is the same.

    2019
    2020

The Reds can be faulted for a lot of things. Skimping on payroll to "maximize profits at all cost" is not one of them. At least not in any economically sensible world.

They absolutely could from 2015-2019. And until we see their books, we can’t say that they aren’t skimping on payroll.

Yes, I would generally agree - for those two years.

Okay, now do the 20 years before that.
