Former MLB/MILB players going overseas this winter...

The CPBL and KBO are busy signing stateside players, the NPB typically follows those two.

KBO rosters are capped at 3 foreign players per team, CPBL and NPB rosters are capped at 4 foreign players per team (though each NPB's minor league affiliate can have additional foreign players on it).

Most players are pitchers, though there are exceptions (like stateside low BAVG power hitters like Dayan Viciedo).

Most players who go overseas sign year to year, though again there are exceptions. Those who do well usually sign multi-year extensions. A small handful re-sign stateside.

CPBL players usually make about .25 to .5M$ per season, KBO players are usually around .5 to 1M$ per (1M$ is the cap for first time foreign players in KBO), NPB contracts are typically larger than both of those coming in around 1 to 2M$ per and top out at around 4M$ per. In other words, they almost all make more than what every minor leaguer makes in the states - even if they are on a 40 man roster.

An interesting note is that Cuban National Series' players are beginning to eat up dedicated foreigner roster spots in the NPB.

Re: Former MLB/MILB players going overseas this winter...

Justin Smoak has signed a 1 year, 6M$ deal with the Yomiuri Giants of the NPB.

He'll be one of the highest paid players in that league next year.

The now 34 year old first baseman, who has accumulated over ten years of mlb service time and 6.0 career bWAR, has hit .201 - .323 - .396 in a combined 632 plate appearances over the past two years with TOR, MIL, and SFG.

Re: Former MLB/MILB players going overseas this winter...

KBO's mandatory spring training reporting date is set for February 1st.

For the first time in many years, KBO will be having their ST in South Korea at the 10 team home sites (rather than in the United States or Australia as they've done in the past). They've each spent hundreds of thousands of dollars this winter setting up massive circus tents and installing heaters throughout for the undertaking.

All international players (all 29 of them under contract for the 2021 season - Kiwoom still has a vacant hitter spot designated for a foreign player) arriving in South Korea are required to undergo a 14 day no-contact quarantine, which means all foreign players were supposed to have arrived in South Korea by noon EST this past Sunday (January the 17th).

Quite a few have failed to meet that deadline, due to no fault of their own and will thus miss the beginning of KBO camp. Dan Straily and his family for example arrived last night and will thus miss the first two days of camp while in quarantine. And Wilmer Font and Wes Parsons are still waiting for their Korean work visas to be approved before they can even get the green light to travel abroad and begin their quarantine.

In 2020, because of the coronavirus pandemic, Opening Day was pushed from March 28 to May 5. The 2021 opening day for KBO is tentatively scheduled for April 3rd.

I'm hoping to attend some KBO games this coming season. KBO ballpark experience very different than MLB...cheaper and cheerleaders!
