State of Ohio, Drivers License / Vehicle Registration Renewal

Just a heads up for anyone who resides in Ohio and has to get their license renewed soon (like myself).

As part of the coronavirus pandemic, Ohio BMV locations were closed during parts of 2020, as such Governor DeWine signed House Bill 197 which permitted the renewal deadline on expiring drivers licenses and vehicle registrations to be extended. That grace period was initially extended to December 1st 2020, but has recently been extended until July 1st, 2021.

So, if you're license expired at anytime between March 9th 2020 and April 1st 2021 you can postpone renewing it until as late as of July 1st of this year. The literal expiration date on your license has been extended until then and is still valid. As are vehicle registrations that may have expired during that time-frame.

Keep in mind that even if your license didn't expire during this period, the REAL ID ACT compliance goes into effect nationwide October 1st, 2021. So, you might need to get a new ID to travel even if it isn't set to expire before that date. A non-compliant Ohio ID that doesn't meet the REAL ID ACT will no longer be valid for airline travel.

In addition, The Ohio General Assembly passed over Christmas a bill that would allow Ohioans between the ages of 21 and 64 to apply for an eight-year driver's license. If DeWine signs the bill, as is expected, you will no longer have to renew your license every 4 years.

(Part of that bill also requires peace officers and current and future Ohio high school students to take training on how to "properly interact" during traffic stops and other encounters between law enforcement and civilians - the training will be required for both graduation and obtaining a license).

I don’t see anything online about DeWine signing the bill so we can apply for an eight year drivers license renew. Is this still expected to happen?
