I mean, they were cut for cost reasons and the Reds as of today don't have anyone that is as good of a SS as Gavlis.
So yea, it's slashing payroll. Can the Reds recover from those losses with some smart moves? Of course.
You have to understand that after dumping Inglesis and all those nontenders, plus rumors the Reds are shopping other players.. some of us are kind of skeptical that the Reds are going to do the additions required to make this team a contender.
Because as of today, they aren't a contender. But yea, that could be fixed with some moves. Hopefully it happens.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Galvis was a FA, they didn’t slash him. They just let him walk away.

Goodwin: I guess. I think they just didn’t want to pay a 5th OF $3 million.
What would you say.....ya do here?

The Reds made the choice last winter to go with a gorilla lineup. Would not have been my choice, but there's an argument for it in modern, shift-happy baseball. My guess is they want to give that plan a longer look than 2020's abbreviated season.

List of shortstops who had a better OPS+ than Semien's 114 from 2018-20:

    Trea Turner: 115
    Corey Seager: 122
    Trevor Story: 122
    Gleyber Torres: 122
    Francisco Lindor: 122
    Xander Bogaerts: 137
Bo Bichette: 137 (in 75 games)
    Fernando Tatis: 154

I think I got them all.

Whomever one chooses to count as being “slashed,” the main point is undeniable - Reds have slashed payroll this off-season. So far, in excess of $40 million pending further player moves and salary decisions.

Just trying to be clear and articulate.

I understand fans rooting for and being supportive of the Reds.

But can’t imagine anyone denying that Reds are cutting payroll this off-season, it’s not just trivial, and it’s not an accident.

I don't think anyone is denying the cut in payroll.

Nick Krall has been quoted as saying he wants to reallocate that money to make the club better.

Most of us believe he's trying to do that, we're not spazing out and we're gonna give him a little time to do that.

This very post seems to deny a cut in payroll. Second sentence suggests Reds will merely “reallocate that money to make the club better.”

So I don’t understand your position, which is fine.

    "Reds negotiating with Marcus Semien"

Reds: "Hi Agent of Marcus Semien. Would Marcus like to play SS for us here in Cincinnati for $1M next year?"
Agent: "No, thank you. If you'd like to make a more serious offer, I'm willing to not hang up the phone immediately."
Reds: "No, that's OK. We don't want to do that."
    Agent: "Fair enough. Goodbye."
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
