MLB hires Theo Epstein as consultant to 'on-field matters

Former Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein will be hired as a consultant for on-field matters by the Major League Baseball Commissioner’s Office.

Epstein will help guide the league at a pivotal time as MLB forges along through the ongoing pandemic and in the midst of negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.

The official announcement is expected to be made later today.

Bruce Levine is a contributor to Marquee Sports Network and a baseball analyst for 670 The Score.

Major League Baseball hired the former Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs executive Thursday as a consultant regarding on-field matters. Epstein also will serve on MLB's Competition Committee and "work with baseball analytics experts" to "determine the likely effects of various rule changes."

This is a smart move by MLB, because Epstein is respected by front offices around baseball and by players. And MLB and the PA desperately need folks to help take them to a middle ground.

"As the game evolves, we all have an interest in ensuring the changes we see on the field make the game as entertaining and action-packed as possible for the fans, while preserving all that makes baseball so special," Epstein said in a statement. "I look forward to working with interested parties throughout the industry to help us collectively navigate toward the very best version of our game."

"The executives, like me, who have spent a lot of time using analytics and other measures to try to optimize individual and team performance have unwittingly had a negative impact on the aesthetic value of the game and the entertainment value of the game in some respects," Epstein said when he resigned.

Now he'll be on the other side of the issue, working with baseball analytics experts to determine the effects of potential rule changes to help the sport overall.
