    Certainly not to save money.

The Reds just signed Castillo for $4.2 million.
Yankees just signed Torres for $4 million.
Doesn't make any sense to me.
Reds may feel it’s easier for them to develop pitching with Boddy and Co than an elite SS.

You're either saving money or getting premium prospects in return for Castillo, not both.
For Castillo, you could conceivably get premium prospects and save money. He's that valuable.

I'd still rather just have Castillo and whichever free agent we signed just a year ago and are trying to sell low on now.

I'm thinking Castillo and Moose for Torres and somebody like Garcia or Schmidt. If I couldn;t get that, and probably couldn't, then I'd keep Castillo, but moving one (or both) of Moose or Castellanos should be a goal and a consideration to be explored in every single deal the Reds discuss IMO.

If I were the Reds I would be negotiating with Votto to waive his no trade clause and try and attach him to this deal. They would dump the contract and give Votto the chance at a ring.
When I see the 2016 Reds, I see a 100 loss team and no direction.

What I don’t understand is Reds apparent interest in outfielders in this trade. In this case, Frazier and Andujar. Andujar also plays third base, a position at which Reds are well stocked.

I would think they’d be looking primarily for middle infield and pitching.

One implication is that Castellanos would be in the trade. Another possible implication is that Suarez is moving.
Something tells me that all of the info here is coming from the Yankees end.

They're just trying to do that whole thing they think they can perpetually do where they move spare parts they don't need for the best players in baseball.

I thought of Castillo and Votto for Voit and Schmidt, but I didn't want to deal with the 500 posts telling me that Votto can't be traded without his permission, like we all don't already know that.

The article also says, "Andujar has a potent bat that helped him finish runner-up in the 2018 National League Rookie of the Year race," which is something I feel confident in saying no Yankee has done before.

I mean, I know Moustakas and Castellanos are a little overpaid, but I’m struggling to understand why people are so excited about unloading two .800+ OPS bats like they are hot nuclear waste.

    I hope so.

But, you know, all these many rumors are unlikely to be out of thin air.

Reds discussing moving Suarez, Gray, Moose, Cast. Now this Castillo business.

Just seems like Reds are looking for another cost saving trade.

IF you attach a bad contract to the deal, you're receiving less in prospect value no matter what.

I will never support surrendering prospect return to save money. The Reds need impact players. Reducing the potential return to save money in the short-term could cause the franchise significant damage in the long run.

That article fails to mention his bat for the past two years.

Agreed, especially when they're basing it off 2020 production.

Castellanos and Moustakas are guys you give the 1st half of 2021 and hope they mash, creating potential trade opportunities at the deadline.

Selling low and/or attaching them to your elite players is very shortsighted.

Ownership would respond that they can’t pay the bills with prospects. They need to cut salary. And are trying to do it without destroying the team.

Fans are skeptical of this, I have no way of knowing the owners’ calculus. But if that’s ownership’s view, then this would be one way of accomplishing it. I agree that attaching bad contracts reduces the player return, absolutely.

These particular rumors are likely coming from the Yankee end. The newspaper (in New Jersey) and the return (heavily in the Yankee's interest) would make that clear.

Other rumors have already been revealed as largely hot air or clickbait. (As evidenced by the lack of movement.)

Revealed as hot air or clickbait to fans who don’t want to hear it.

But all the rumors fit together. It’s really all one rumor. Reds continue to explore cost saving trades. They won’t move without a fair return, aren’t jumping at anything, but are looking around with different possible candidates.

I don’t know who is leaking the rumors, but they fit with Reds’ off-season and are too persistent to reject so easily.
