Good lord that's a negative header to start a new thread. Okey dokey, I guess. They are 1-0.
Well, that's what those words mean. He was here. If they don't keep him, he will have been lost/subtracted. I headed out the door today with two shoes on my feet. If I don't return with them, I have lost them. If I do return with them, I haven't added them. ---M2

Re: 2021 Cincinnati Bengals Part 3: Is Zac the right coach?

I will move this since it was the last post in the other thread -

    My thoughts---

---a good reminder that if Burrow can stay uninjured, he is THAT guy

---The line did fine protecting him - the worst hits came on questionable protection schemes (Sample/Perine on Hunter was no bueno - CJ missing an assignment and allowing a free blizter up the middle)

---Enjoyed seeing them try and assert some dominance with Mixon - baby steps

---I too hated ZT going for it - but in hindsight will amend that to...I hated the play call. At least ZT isn't scared

---Hated the play call on 3rd and 4 on first play out of two minute warning too - a 1st down there and game is over and instead a run. Thought maybe ZT got in his own head after the 3rd quarter going for it when awry

---The d-line were beasts. Especially interior. We can do some business as year goes on if that is the case.

---They also did a nice job on Cook all things considered

--I guess after Apple's disastrous series he was 'aight but man I hope Wayans can get back.

---What a play from Pratt to force the fumble. Replay of Hill fumbling against Stealers - similar close call too. I would have lost my cool if they had overturned the call on the field since Hill's fumble stood in the playoff disaster

---Glad to see Chase bury the narrative right away. He and Higgins and Boyd are going to be such a matchup advantage.

    ---God Mixon looked good.

---Having McPherson is...well...it's so damn nice.

---Glad to see some breaks come our way - feels like we just need a little oxygen to feed the spark here. Burrow can lead this team to great places.

2021 Cincinnati Bengals Part 3: Is Zac the right coach?

I do not think going for it up 2 scores in the latter part of the 3rd Q is a good risk management move. 4th and 1 is barely better than a 50/50 shot. At least he got the second chance and had the cajones to make a bolder play call.

The D was above average. Only one Bungle moment on the 3rd and 24 conversion that ended up the first TD.

According to the analytics, going for it there versus punting was basically a toss up, with a very slight lean toward going for it. I know that you can't just follow that off a cliff, but it wasn't a crazy decision IMO. And it probably would have been converted if Mixon didn't stumble in the backfield.

I want a coach that trusts his team and plays to win instead of not to lose. Sometimes it'll end badly, but I think it will be a benefit over the course of the season.

Yeah, I mean, after how cautious Marvin was I am totally not used to this - and I don't want to be captive to hindsight being mad because it didn't work. ZT said after the game he didn't second guess going for it but he might have second guessed his play call. I think that is right. Punting was certainly safer. But...again, at least ZT wasn't coaching scared.

After 20 years of Marvin Lewis, I like the gutsy calls. Although I think that last one was a change of the play at the line by Burrow.

DLine is solid. LBS are slow. Secondary looks pretty darn good.

Offense was knocking off the rust all game. Assuming good health, they should get better every week.

I wouldn't say the Bengals looked formidable, but this is one they usually lose and they pulled it out. At the end of the day, the W is all that matters and they got it.

Not sure I agree on LBers looking slow BobS - Cook had 20 carries for just 61 yards and he's got legit burst. LBers get some credit for assisting in holding him to 3.0 ypc average, I think. 6 catches for 43 yards is ok - not great but not terrible. Cook lives on explosive plays and the front 7 really didn't let that happen. That's prob a good sign...

I agree the thread title is garbage…

From what I read Burrow was given 2 plays on the 4th down…kid made the correct call out of the two choices based on what he saw.

The O Line better get ready as the Bears defense is really good…5 sacks ain’t gonna get it done.

The new additions to the defense looked great today. Hilton in particular I think is going to be a beast for us.

Taylor said he should have called the play they ran in OT from the 30 instead of the run.

Plans to be aggressive all season on offense and defense which I am looking forward to.

Hill did all his damage in 24 snaps too...2 sacks!!!

I liked Lou's use of Ricardo Allen throughout the game...Bengals are very strong up the middle at DT and safety which is going to be huge throughout the season if they stay healthy.

Bears line is weak in spots so I would expect more pressure up the middle.

Williams and Reiff were both excellent in pass blocking too...84 and 78

Hopkins had some really bad plays. Completely whiffed on one leading to a huge sack. Hopefully it's just some rust after coming back from injury and he picks it up over the next few games

Re: 2021 Cincinnati Bengals Part 3: Is Zac the right coach?

Saw an interesting note the other day:

The last four years the Vikings have used either a first or second round pick on an offensive lineman:

    Christian Darrisaw
    Ezra Cleveland
    Garrett Bradbury
    Brian O’Neill

    Two thoughts:

The Vikings aren’t getting return on their investment.

It makes a compelling point not to keep investing capital to protect your QB. The Vikings are essentially what people wanted the Bengals to do and keep doing. Invest in the O-line and ignore everything else.
