Final Roster Decisions for NRI's quickly approaching...

"Cut Week" across MLB begins this coming Monday.

The term is used amongst front offices league wide, and refers to roster decisions that; due too previously agreed upon MLBPA/MLB contracts, have to be made prior to opening day. Due to those stipulations, most teams can't wait till the last minute, they have to settle their final roster spots prior to opening day.

Every year there are over 600 players signed to minor league contracts and invited to big league camps. This year's NRI lists include over 400 players with prior big league service and a select group of those players (44 players as of this moment) are referred too as Article XX-B Free Agent Signees. For a refresher on who these players are, please read the stickied thread above that I have updated throughout the off-season.

In any given year maybe 10% of those 600 will have their contracts purchased for opening day, and at least half of those players are usually XX-B Free Agent Signings.

If the following 44 players are either not released by noon (EST) on Saturday, March 27th or are not added to an MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) or MLB 60-day Disabled List by noon (EST) on Thursday, April 1st then the player shall automatically receive a $100,000 retention bonus, and the player shall receive an additional clause in their minor league contract that allows them to universally opt-out of their minor league contract on June 1st if he has not been added to an MLB Active List (26-man roster) or an MLB Disabled List by that date.

Additionally, if any of the following 24 players sign a minor league contract prior to noon (EST) on Monday, March 22nd then they would be added to the above list. ---If 2021 is like any other year, half of these players will be released prior to those stipulated deadlines (and in most cases re-signed a few days later to new minor league contracts) so that their current teams don't have to pay them a retention bonus. Most of the remaining half will make opening day rosters. A small number will be awarded the "retention" bonus.

Re: Final Roster Decisions for NRI's quickly approaching...

I should add that there are additional NRI's in camps who didn't qualify as XX-B Free Agents this past winter who also have decision deadline dates written into their current minor league contracts.

This figure could double the number of known players who have to be told whether or not they will make opening day rosters prior to opening day. The vast majority are unknown to the public, and most will have release clauses for the 25th, 26th, and 27th of this month.

Travis Shaw and Junior Guerra are two players that fit into this later group...they've already had their contracts purchased in front of said deadlines.

Chris owings or Brock Holt would be an upgrade here.

Owings possibly IMHO...I'd take him over Holder, Gordon, and Farmer.

I'd pass on Holt, I think age has caught up with him. Plus his late 70's porn stache scares the hell out of me.

The Reds have mino rleague infielders oon teh bench. Farmer is OK because he can field a little and play lots of positions, I don't like any of the others much. Blandino might be alright, but I'd take my chances woth Holt first. How do you feel about Freeman. I don't think he's a big leaguer either.

I Owings makes the Rockies roster. He made it last year as an NRI, and the Rockies will need infielders when they unload Story like they did Arenado.

The Phillies have three veteran relief arms that all need to be added to the 40-man roster.

All three would look good in Cincinnati.

Re: 2020-2021 Off-season News Notes and Discussion #2

After signing a minor league contract with the Orioles as spring training began, veteran right-hander Matt Harvey was added to the team’s 40-man roster on Thursday.

Harvey, who will turn 32 on Saturday, will be one of the Orioles’ starting pitchers after posting a 5.40 ERA in three starts during the Grapefruit League season.

TEX has informed XX-B Free Agent signee Brock Holt that his contract will be purchased for opening day.

CLE has informed RP Bryan Shaw his contract will be purchased (he is a non XX-B Free Agent signee who had an opt out in his contract - similar to Travis Shaw and Junior Guerra).

Re: 2020-2021 Off-season News Notes and Discussion #2

XX-B Free Agent signee Tommy Hunter was released by NYM today after being informed he wouldn't make their opening day roster, he's now free to sign with anyone.

The 11 year veteran allowed 7 baserunners in 5 innings pitched this spring. From 2013 to 2018 he averaged 60 games and a 128 ERA+ per season, he then missed almost all of 2019 due too flexor tendon surgery. He pitched okay in his return in 2020 but his fastball velocity was nearly 4 mph below his career high.

XX-B Free Agent signee Gio Gonzalez has announced his retirement after being informed he would not make the Marlins opening day roster.

The 35 year old former pitcher saw action in just 1/3rd of an inning this spring. He'll step away from the game with 133 wins to his name.

Re: 2020-2021 Off-season News Notes and Discussion #2

The Phillies have released XX-B Free Agent Signees Ivan Nova and Hector Rondon after they were told they wouldn't make the opening day roster.

Neither one of the pitchers fared well in limited spring action, and will very likely have to settle for new minor league contracts, in Philly or elsewhere, if they wish to continue their baseball careers.
