Mike Leake won’t be playing to start the season after turning down multiple offers. Word is that if things are more back to “normal” in terms of the virus he will be back pitching later in the season assuming there is a good fit. Leake opted out last year.

    Alternate Sites will be returning...

I'll be merging this with the general news thread in a day or so, but for now I'm creating a separate thread because it's fairly huge news.

It's being reported that the AAA season will be postponed by at least a month. We already knew that of the lower levels, but it was believed that the AAA season would be able to kick off April 6th so that the MLB clubs would still have a player flow to fill-in for injured players in April.

That will no longer be the case, so now those players who were slated to go to AAA in four weeks time will now go to the alternate sites that teams used in 2020.

No word yet on the amount of players allowed.

There is hope that the AAA season will extend through September now as well, but that has yet to be decided.

Alternate sites are coming back — and the AAA season, which was scheduled to begin April 6, will be delayed for at least a month, sources tell ESPN.

News at ESPN on the reason for delay, the wait for vaccines and how this alt site will differ from 2020's:

Main reason seems to be to allow for vaccinations before games (and travel) begin.

Also I’ve read this could result in more games with fans in the stands.

Major League Baseball has opted to delay the Triple A season at least one month amid COVID-19 concerns, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Triple A games were slated to begin on April 6. However, the season opener won't be held until May 1 at the earliest. Its schedule is now slated to mirror Double-A and Class A, per Passan. MLB's opening day will still be held on April 1.

"This is a prudent step to complete the major league and minor league seasons as safely as possible," MLB executive Morgan Sword told Passan. "We look forward to having fans back in ballparks across the country very soon."

Minor league players will now report to alternate sites run by their organization's MLB team ahead of opening day. Alternate sites were used throughout the 2020 season as players continued to workout and train despite the absence of live games.
