I didn't expect these guys to go for 1 year deals. The free agent shortstops available next year will be a buyers market: Marcus Semien, Andrelton Simmons, Francisco Lindor, Javier Báez, Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Trevor Story.

You have to think Didi wants at least 2 years to avoid being near the bottom of that market; I thought Semien would attempt to avoid it as well.

Yes, I would guess the hang up with Didi is that he wants a multi-year contract. He took a $14 million one-year pillow deal with the Phils last season. He was probably counting on a longer contract now.

And agree, he would want to avoid being at the bottom of the strong list next off-season.

Some creativity is in order, somebody will figure out a way to sign him up.

It will basically go like this: Didi would rather play in Philly, but if you offer him the extra year and a million or two more/year, he's all yours.

Simmons and Semien might not have had the option for more than a 1 year deal. My guess is that teams see all the SS available next year and don’t want to be left out of that bidding, so they are only offering one year deals this off season.

That is a shockingly high number for Simmons IMO

Heyman says he wants 2 years $30M.

Seems pretty fair given what Semien and Simmons just received. That would eat up the cash the Reds saved by dumping Bradley and Iglesias. I say go for it, but it’s also not my money.

I dunno, dude is an absolute elite defensive SS that doesn’t have a terrible bat. He’s underrated.

I'd pull the trigger on that if we could spend $15M on him and not have to cut any more salary. Didi is the best bet based on what is out there if Story really will not be moved.

I guess it depends on if you think he can rebound to 2018 levels. Hasn’t posted an OPS above 700 since then, and he’s 31 now. I would personally not pay him nearly that much.

sure would have been nice to not overpay for moose. $16M per year for 4 years. for an aging second baseman who has trouble getting on base. woof.

I think you meant to say an aging DH/3B who the Reds think can play 2B...
"In our sundown perambulations of late, through the outer parts of Brooklyn, we have observed several parties of youngsters playing 'base', a certain game of ball. Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our close rooms, the game of ball is glorious"
