The Jays roster stands at 39. It would appear that they would DFA him if they were to add anyone else to their roster. Knowing he would be taken, they decided to get something in return. Good pickup. He has one option remaining.

Perez looks promising. It's gonna be an interesting spring training pitching-wise, a lot of new arms trying to do the same exact thing.

I'm beginning to get the feeling this offseason will amount to 1 shortstop and a litany of relief pitching cast-offs.

#Reds add another pitcher in a trade. Cionel Pérez pitched in 7 games for the Astros last year.

    Cincinnati Reds @Reds

Welcome to Reds Country, LHP Cionel Pérez!

The #Reds today acquired Pérez from the Astros in exchange for minor league C Luke Berryhill. The 40-man roster is now at 37.

I used to target Cionel Perez in a lot of Astros trade proposals a few years ago, he was considered a pretty good prospect. And he’s from Cuba, which is always a plus.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Young LHP they presumably like without giving up much of anything? I like that.

He's under team control through 2025 too.

I'm going to give Boddy and his team the benefit of the doubt in these type of acquisitions until they give me reason not to.

The Reds seem to be targeting high spin rate higher velocity guys. Might be a good plan if they aren’t chasing names.

Is Luke Berryhill related to former Reds 3rd-string C Damon Berryhill?
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman. Damn glad to meet ya.

Re: 2020-2021 Off-season News Notes and Discussion #2

    Love this deal.

Perez and Perez (Cionel and Hector) are high upside arms with at least one option remaining. That's really going to be important, I suspect, in building the 2021 pen.

At this point, there are seven relievers with no options remaining (including Lorenzen, who may end up in the starting rotation). Perez, Perez, Hendrix, Antone, Bailey, and a host of minor league 40-man roster guys can be sent down without impunity, but there's really only a couple of spots. That would almost assuredly mean Cincinnati will expose at least a couple guys to waivers. Romano, Noe Ramirez, and Jose DeLeon are out of options, as are Jeff Hoffman, Lucas Sims, Amir Garrett. Only two of those are, IMO, sure things to be kept on the roster-- Garrett and Sims. If Lorenzen ends up in the pen, he's a relative sure thing to be kept. Or Antone. (Or both, depending on who is acquired for the starting staff.)

The Reds might well just keep adding guys like this instead of signing a bigger name like Brad Hand, Colome, et al.

They have spots on the 40-man roster (and should continue to have spots even if the 40-man fills up, as they can just replace a Romano or a Hoffman with a guy who has an option). They might also be waiting to fill bullpen spots with those who are let go by other teams as roster spot casualties.

    Garret Richards got $10 million.

Perhaps baseball is not broken. I feel like players are getting paid this offseason.

I still think it's broken on a fundamental level, like with the Reds declining arb on Archie Bradley, but yes its nice to see that free agents aren't receiving the squeeze that seemed likely to return this offseason.

As expected, teams have the money to spend. Unfortunately the 2020 seemed to grow the division between big market teams and everyone else. There are only a few teams spending money and it’s the same usual suspects.

Sources tell me there are indications that Jameson Taillon will be the next Pirates player to be traded -- possibly in the next day or two. The Pirates have already dealt Joe Musgrove this offseason, so it would not be a surprise if Taillon is moved, too.

Taillon would be a guy I'd pay a decent price for-- Garcia, Lodolo, and India would probably get it done (though they may have to add in a Santillan, DeLeon, or Vlad Gutierrez). He's not going to make much this season, and he'd be an ideal guy to replace Bauer in the rotation.

They'd have to sign a FA SS (Gregorius or Semien for three years and $40M gets it done, I'd think) and could be done not just for this season and (depending on Castellanos's season) have done almost all the heavy lifting for next season as well.
