I could see Farmer as a RH half of a platoon, but the vast majority of the swings would come against righties so they would need something. If they don't get Didi, not sure what they do.

Kyle Farmer is gonna be starting at SS on Opening Day. I can feel it.
Bob Castellini, ladies and gentlemen.
...and I’ll be more than happy to eat crow if and when I’m (hopefully) wrong.

Here's what I'd explore if Didi signs with Phillies. If he signs, he's the SS. Alec Bohm will be the third baseman. The 2b will either be Jean Segura (14.5 mill) or Scott Kingery (4.25 mill).
Option 1 - Phiilies eat a bunch (50%) of Segura's contract and trade him to Reds for next to nothing. Saves Phillies 7 million. Reds get a SS for 7 mill. (He has another year on deal)
Option 2 - We take a chance on Kingery as our SS for 2021. If Segura is at 2b, Kingery has nowhere to play.
Option 3 - Phillies traded for a minor league SS from Boston a week ago for a PTBNL. CJ Chatham. Boston had to make room on their 40. Well if Didi signs, Philly is at 40 and needs to cut someone. Obviously the price wouldn't be too high. He's a former 2nd rounder, a Top 30 prospect for both clubs. He'd be dirt cheap. Good average, no power.
I actually like Option 3, the best. Low cost in terms of both prospects and cash. That gives us 3 possible rookies to claim the position. (Chatham, AlfRod, Garcia) and maybe Blandino as fallback position.

Looking more and more like Concepcion is going to be the answer. Or maybe Barry Larkin? Larkin is a little younger.

Agreed, it would not be consistent with what they have done this offseason thus far.
I would not want them to give up good prospects to rent Story for one year at 18.5 million.
If we lived in a world where the Reds could spend money freely, it would be a different story, of course.
Disclaimer: Not a criticism of the Reds, just my opinion.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob
