I don’t have The Athletic but apparently Rosenthal just published an article in which Cast has instructed Krall to go spend on a SS and build a contender.
Let’s go.

Bad news: Dodgers are now in on Semien

This is what they should be doing. The iron is hot. Strike.
They should be doing the same thing the Padres are doing, asking "why not us?"

If the funds are available, certainly take advantage of the central teams weakening. It would appear to be an about turn, but perhaps the FO has realized the weak returns on dealing vets this off season and have adjusted their plans accordingly. Perhaps optimism was warranted. We'll see.

Should be noted, when small market teams look to move players they really should want to keep if they were inclined to field a respectable team, they frequently get pantsed. Other teams are happy to rip them off on their way down. In this case, I'm not sure the Reds did anything other than gauge the market value of their players. It just got leaked because other teams were trying to shake them loose, at least it seems that way. If that enraged Castellini and now he wants payback, cool.

Unpossible. There were too many rumors leaked from other teams that proved the Reds were having a fire sale.

"Today was the byproduct of us thinking we can come back from anything." - Joey Votto after blowing a 10-1 lead and holding on for the 12-11 win on 8/25/2010.
It’s within a “notes” article. Here is the whole quote;
If the Reds trade a starting pitcher, it’s still more likely to be righty Sonny Gray, but even that possibility might be fading. The team sent closer Raisel Iglesias to the Angels earlier this offseason, but owner Bob Castellini has resisted tear-downs in the past and instructed club officials to focus on finding a shortstop, with free agent Didi Gregorius, a former Red, among the possibilities.

i'm very plesantly surprised by this report and very happy that it looks like i was wrong about the reds doing nothing but shedding salary this offseason. i still need to see it to truly believe it, but this is very encouraging to say the least.
It doesn't say that Cast ordered them to spend on a SS, it just said he's resisted teardowns in the past and told Kroll to find a SS. The Reds were trying to get Torres from the Yanks for Castillo, so I'm guessing that "spending" on a SS is plan B at this point.

So. About that bullpen.
REDREAD (01-18-2021)
bullpen is obviously loaded or else the reds would not have been willing to give away their closer for nothing.

and listen, i know iggy was not exactly appreciated around these parts. i also recognize he was not a great closer. however, by any metric that you can think of, he is a "good" major league closer. just still confused on why everyone on here was cool with the reds giving away a good closer for nothing, just to cut costs.
and again, you might not think iggy is good ("you" meaning everyone on this board). but his numbers prove otherwise.
