What is your opinion of Rob Manfred, and the job he is doing as Commissioner of Baseball?

Universal agreement makes for good discussion threads.

Depends on how you interpret “good for Baseball”.

The owners probably love him. The players’ union probably isn’t a fan. The fans see the gulf between haves and have-nots continue to widen. And the game on the field continues to move in a non-traditional way. Some fans like that. Some don’t.

He's a lawyer whose job is to represent the interests of baseball's ownership group. Every thing he does is in the interest of making the owners more money.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

The All-Star game has never stopped in a tie during his tenure so that is a plus.

He seems to hate baseball but love money.

If he was truly concerned about Covid, he would have made his proposal that he just made to the players well before Christmas.

My ultimate opinion is that he's no Bowie Kuhn - and I really hated Bowie Kuhn and when I say he's no Bowie Kuhn, he doesn't act in the best interests of baseball, he acts in the best interests of Ba$eball.

He's a commissioner in the Goodell mode (CEO of a major corporation rather than a sportsman-as-guardian type) but somehow is worse at it than Goodell. I have disagreed with virtually every change made to the game as well as all his rhetoric. Just speaking personally, it's been a catastrophic last five years for my fandom. Of course, the Reds record and direction (or lack thereof) has more to do with it than anything the commissioner has done. But it definitely hasn't helped.

    Re: Rob Manfred ?

He’s terrible. Constantly missing the forest for the trees.

He’s more worried about shaving 25 seconds off the game time than he is about the fact that tanking has become an outright epidemic across the league during his tenure. The extra innings rule belongs in little league.

As others have said, I’m sure the owners love him. But I’ve seen him do very little that was truly in the best long-term interest of the game. Everything has been geared at short-term profits which is cutting your nose off to spite your face in my opinion. It’s great to make a few million more this year, but what about the millions you’re throwing away by alienating current and/or potential future fans?

Also, his slap on the wrist for The Astros was reprehensible. The biggest scandal to hit MLB since Pete’s gambling and The 1919 White Sox before that, and a couple of executives and field managers were the only ones that got punished even a little bit.

Joe freakin’ Kelly got punished more harshly than a single member of that Astros team did. Rob Manfred is a clown.

I don’t like his bosses, and he is a reflection of his bosses. He is a better communicator than Selig, which is damming with faint praise. Selig did, however, grow into the job, and his legacy improved. If Manfred doesn’t pull off a magic trick in the next couple years, then I don’t think the owners will let him finish out his contract in 2023 and 2024.

He's bad at his job overall and is a determent to the long term health of baseball.

A sport that has trouble creating new fans kills the easiest way to get kids hooked (MiLB)... Makes perfect sense.
