    2021 Spring Training News...

More definitive word is likely coming by week's end (possibly as soon as tomorrow) but it looks as though Spring Camps in Florida and Arizona will officially open next Wednesday, February 17th for officially six weeks.

Each team is going to play 28 Spring Games (after a week or so of practicing and conditioning), with extremely little travel involved (E.g. the 30 clubs will be split up into six "pods" and only play amongst teams in their designated pod).

There won't be any split-squad games on the schedule (I.e. MLB will nix the often used one home and one road game double header schedule), this makes sense as travel is being minimized and the number of players in camp will be cut.

The facilities are likely going to be closed to the public, i.e. no attendance.

Each team will be limited to how many players they can have in their spring camps. Meaning, each club is likely only going to carry 40 man roster players, players on MiLB deals who have a legit chance of making an opening day squad and are destined to play in AAA if not (in any given year there are usually around 300 players on MiLB deals with past MLB service time), and top prospects.

The numbers aren't set in stone as of yet, but it will likely be around 80 players per team - somewhat similar to the 60-man player pool used in 2020 for the MLB alternate sites.

Mandatory testing will be in-place for all players and staff.

The AAA season is currently slated to open in conjunction with the MLB season in early April, meaning that most of the players who are in the initial camp who don't make the MLB opening day squad will be assigned directly to their AAA affiliate for early April games. This ensures there is a ready pipeline to MLB clubs to fill-in for injuries. No word on whether any of these 30 AAA clubs will be allowed in-game attendance out of the gate.

There will be a second spring camp set up immediately after the MLB camp precludes that will welcome in all of the 30 organization's other minor league players, this will be a slightly larger group (perhaps as many as 120). These players are destined to start the 2021 season in AA, A+, and A level ball. The season for those 3 levels will be delayed by at least a month.

A "third" camp would then take place in the AZ/FL/and Dominican parks for players assigned to those "rookie-level" rosters. These teams may be forced to run more as an instructional level rather than competitive in 2021.

Salary increases for all full-season minor leaguers will take effect this season, 2021 minimums for players on minor league contracts (e.g. non-40 man roster players), will rise from $290 weekly to $400 at rookie levels, from $290 to $500 at Class A, from $350 to $600 at Double-A, and from $502 to $700 at Triple-A.

I would suggest that the Affiliate map belongs more in the Affiliate shuffle thread than this one. (As does the Bamatank thread/post).

    Re: 2021 Spring Training News...

So the Reds announced their Early Minor league roster. These are minor leaguers who did not get an invite to Major League Spring Training but still come early. I think that's significant in that AA and lower leagues won't be starting until at least May 1.

Lodolo and Greene are both invited. As are India, Finnegan and Friedl. So they MIGHT start in AAA. On the other hand so is Lyon Richardson and I don't think there's any chance he does.

I think this presages Lodolo and Greene to AA to start the season, perhaps with Richardson, Lillie, Sanmartin, and Ashcraft. (Yes, I realize that's a six-man rotation. It makes sense after a season wherein most pitchers didn't get consistent innings.)

If so, that's some pretty aggressive movement for both Ashcraft and Richardson and a rather promising AA rotation. I particularly like Lillie as an underrated guy who might well turn into something. Finnegan and Pidich could be relief arms of some note as well.

Reading the tea leaves that absolutely may not be there at all, what may be more interesting is if the Reds are signaling that Greene is to become a reliever. He'd be of help this season in that role, and, IMO, could well make the major league team.

Something to keep an eye on, at any rate.

I see zero evidence that Reds are thinking about Greene as a reliever. And they should not.

Not saying it’s going to happen, but Boddy said it out loud as an option during that recent AMA he did on Reddit.

Between Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and Tony Santillan, who is most likely to reach 100 major league innings first?

Great question. Hard to say. A lot depends on what we do with the... 26-man?... roster at the big league level and what the flexibility will be in COVID year pt. 2. Santillan at his best could help us very quickly in the ML bullpen, as could Hunter, so that could open a window for Lodolo to sneak in 100 IP before they do even if he gets to the league slower than the others.

Minor League ST will begin this Sunday in Goodyear for most of the players slated to play in the AA and A levels this year. Most of the eventual AAA players are currently being assigned to the alternate sites.

Greene and Lodolo absent from that list must mean they are targeted for AA (or lower)

    Most likely.

They are reporting to minor league camp this weekend in Goodyear. There are a handful of other guys who were in that initial minor league phase (alongside the big league phase) also slated for Goodyear rather than Louisville.

    Re: 2021 Spring Training News...

That may be the least inspiring group of AAA hitters the Reds have trotted out in some time.

I'm guessing Cuthbert's going to play lots of both infield corners, with at least one OF manning 1B (Heineman? Delmonico?) when he moves across the diamond. Garcia should be entrenched at SS (though there are a bunch of guys who can play there as well). That leaves 2B for Schrock and most of the 3B ABs for Lopez (who's shown a sneaky good hit tool with no pop at all in the minors) and AlfRod (who's shown nothing offensively). A (much) better offense moves Cuthbert to 3B and installs one of the extra OF at 1B and DH.

    C Grullon
    1B Delmonico
    2B Schrock
    SS Garcia
    3B Cuthbert
    LF Crook
    CF Friedl
    RF Payton
    DH Crook

The rotation is interesting. O'Brien, Santillan, Takahashi, Sanmartin, and one of Braden Shipley, Vlad Gutierrez, or Brandon Finnegan is pretty solid for AAA. Lots of experience, some (limited) upside. I like four or five of those guys as bullpen depth or BOR starters.

The bullpen is where the real talent of the team lies. That's a whole lot of MLB adequacy ready just in case.

    Re: 2021 Spring Training News...

That's our organization's Achilles heel. If you assume that India and Stephenson are on the big club to stay, other than Garcia, we don't have an impact bat that has played above rookie ball. And why if all things are equal I'd like to see a college bat in this years draft.
