I was hoping for a couple of relievers on minor league deals at this point or even a Trevor Rosenthal type.
And just like that they go and sign Cam Bedrosian. Nice pickup.

Could have had Mark Melancon for 2 million plus 1 million buyout. Would have been a great addition to the backend of the pen.

"Slick Fielding SS" Sergio Alcantara DFA'd by the Cubs. Only 24 years old. No power whatsoever, but got on base at a decent clip in AA. Has never played AAA. Had a cup of coffee with the Tigers in 2020

Except that's not always how things work. If you are a 36 year old Mark Melancon who has never won a world series would you rather play for SDP or CIN?

Correct, very likely the Reds would have had to double that offer.

If not more, he is fresh off a $64M contract.

I would rather have Alcantara than Holder.

Dustin Fowler DFA'd by the Athletics. You may remember him as a prospect the A's got when they traded Sonny to New York only for Fowler to tear up his knee in a freak accident. He's still just 26 and has hit pretty well, though not phenomenally, in the minors since then. I'd take a flier on him on the 40 Man over a guy like Mark Payton.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Fowler is out of options - he was going to be DFA'd in the next 4 weeks no matter what, Payton still has 2 left.

I misread that as Dexter Fowler.

    Re: Dumpster Diving 2021

MLB Trade Rumors came out with their annual Out of Options List for 2021 There are several guys who may be interesting SS, should they become available.

    Among them:

    Aledemys Diaz (HOU)
He's more of a utility guy so far, but the bat has proven solid (career 109 OPS+) and the SS glove is adequately poor. He'd be much better than current options, according to projections.

    Edmundo Sosa (STL)
He's 25 and has shown some semblance of ability with both the bat and the glove. Sosa is a year more advanced than Garcia. I'd be fine with throwing him to the wolves as a sacrificial lamb, if it comes to it. (Perhaps with a better bat behind him.) Sosa had a very good 2019 season in the PCL (.291/ .335/ .466/ .801), but that was the PCL. He does not walk at all. Probably an 8th place hitter at best.

    Jorge Mateo (SDP)
With the wealth of options ahead of him, I'm having a hard time seeing Mateo breaking camp with the Pads. If not, I'd be fine with the Reds taking a gamble on his speed. He's another who had a very nice PCL-inflated 2019 (.289/ .330/ .504/ .834). He's a former top 100 prospect as well. I'd do it, if only to see what he had. (Farmer as a caddy would make lots of sense.) If nothing more, he could play a late-inning pinch running role.

    Christian Arroyo (BOS)
The opposite of Mateo and Sosa in many regards, Arroyo is willing to take a walk, has a decent hit tool, and burgeoning pop. He could blossom with consistent ABs. He owns a questionable glove as a SS and is probably better served as a utility guy, but beggars and choosers are difficult to differentiate at this late date.

    Alaberto Mondesi (KCR)
The least likely to be let loose, IMO, Mondesi had a very good 2020. I have no clue why MLBTradeRumors would include him, honestly, but if he's cut loose, I'd be livid at the Reds for not moving heaven and earth to get him.

    Jorge Polanco (MIN)
Polanco is, at this point, a solid hitter who struggles to man the position. I'd argue he's Eugenio Suarez without the power, but I'm exhausted with that conversation at this point. Polanco would undoubtedly project better than Farmer, Garcia, or whomever the Reds plan to trot out there. The question is whether he'd be available. If he is, Krall should get him.

I'd be fine with some of these guys, but Polanco and Mondesi aren't going to be available. Arroyo isn't a SS option.

Besides just a starting SS, the Reds could use some IF depth in general...ie some bench help. Several or most of those guys would improve the bottom of the roster, even if they don't have the glove to be a regular SS.

I'm sure he knows to stay far, far away.
