The best swing of my life - 2021 edition

    Tucker Barnhart -

The offseason was spent at home in Indianapolis with a personal hitting coach, Benny Craig, to give him a fresh set of eyes on his swing.

“Just kind of molding me as a hitter, the good things that I’ve done the last couple of years to the hitter that I am or that I was in my best years in ’16 and ’17,” Barnhart said. “You’ll see a combination of both of those and I can’t wait to get going.”

Kyle Farmer said he was checked Twitter daily to see the #Reds had signed a shortstop. He worked this offseason with Pirates hitting coach Rick Eckstein to rework his swing

Some video from today from Farmer.

'“My swing last year was not built for my body,” Kyle Farmer said. So, he revamped it this winter. Here are a few of his swings from BP today (video via Reds PR).

Re: The best swing of my life - 2021 edition

Joey Votto on his late season 2020 adjustment and alterations for 2021. Per Twitter

"It’s going to come with some more swings and misses and more strikeouts but as long as I’m productive and as long as I’m dangerous at the plate, it will pay itself off.”

"I refined last year. I'll be better than the back little bit of the season just because I've worked on it and I'll dedicate myself to it. I can't wait. I'm so excited."

So basically he intends to carry on his approach from last year (swinging harder for more power) knowing it will result in more strikeouts. But the added power will be worth it. And that he thinks he will be better at it in 2021.

We get the State of Votto address every spring and I appreciate it, from the most cerebral ballplayer in baseball. I just want to see him get off to a hot start and not cool down, even though he’s 37.

Slight concern for me with Votto. His new approach depends a lot on hitting ball out of park. If power disappears, pitchers will pound strike zone with impunity. Walks will disappear. If power is gone, and walks are gone.....

And this becomes concern for me with new less juiced ball.

I think what he said about trying to minimize K's over the previous two seasons is something we all noticed. He seemed to be all in for long AB's with many pitches spoiled. He did look different in the last part of 2020. My concern would be more along the lines of being slow to catch up to a premium FB.

I love Eric Davis but I don't know if any player should be aping his swing if they haven't grown up doing it. It worked for ED since his wrists were so quick and strong but I'm not sure it works for anyone else.

Does anyone know of any player who wasn’t a good hitter, who changed his swing in the off season, then became a good hitter? I recall reading of many who tried it, but I can’t recall any who have succeeded. Scott Schebler was the last one I remember.

    Jose Bautista is the poster-child.

That said, lots of players rework their games during the offseason, or even during the season. They're talented enough to do that.

Aquino says he tinkered with a few things on his swing, but got into no specifics. Also wants to get back to having fun, since he thinks that will make a difference. I have more faith in swing tinkering than reliance on fun.

Hope he can find his groove again.
