I would think comments like this won't fly in liberal Seattle...

From NBC Sports w/ NBC Sports comments:

Mariners president Kevin Mather told the Bellevue Rotary Club in an interview that Jarred Kelenic will not be on the Opening Day roster for the Mariners. Mather also mentioned -- quite candidly -- that the Mariners offered Kelenic a long-term offer, but that the prospect declined and is going to "bet on himself." Mather also make some rather callous remarks regarding several player's ability to speak English, so a warning for those who click on the link below. The president of the club says that he expects Kelenic to make his debut in late April, which is another blatant example of manipulating service time.

Mariners president Kevin Mather apologizes for comments
Mather addressed the team’s payroll and watching the financial bottom line. He said he believed top prospects Jarred Kelenic and Logan Gilbert likely will not start the season with the team as a way to manipulate their major league service time and keep them under club control longer.

Mather said longtime third baseman Kyle Seager would be a future Mariners Hall of Famer but also was “overpaid.” Seager is in the final year of his contract with the Mariners and will be Seattle's highest-paid player at $18 million. His contract includes a club option for 2022.

Mather made disparaging comments about former pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma, who recently rejoined the team as a special assignment coach.

“Wonderful human being — his English was terrible. He wanted to get back into the game, he came to us, we quite frankly want him as our Asian scout/interpreter, what’s going on with the Japanese league. He’s coming to spring training,” Mather said. “And I’m going to say, I’m tired of paying his interpreter. When he was a player, we’d pay Iwakuma ‘X,’ but we’d also have to pay $75,000 a year to have an interpreter with him. His English suddenly got better. His English got better when we told him that.”

To see the video, you just had to hover your mouse over the "source" I quoted and click, but then it changed access, so thanks for reposting it.

meh, sounds like he was kinda joking about the japanese interpreter. maybe not "joking" per se but definitely light-hearted.

the other stuff? he's just being honest. of course they are going to wait to bring up kelenic since that is what every team in MLB does. complete non-story there.

and yes, kyle seager is greatly overpaid at $18M per year. also a complete non-story.

we complain when people aren't honest. then we complain when they are.

Not sure what liberal has to do with it but, no, I can't imagine stating publicly:

    - Your starting 3B is probably overpaid
    - A foreign born player's English "suddenly improved" after complaining about paying an interpreter
    - The contents of private contract negotiations with several players
    - The player's union begged another player not to sign a contract
    - Alluding, pretty strongly, to service time manipulation
    Among other things...

That's not going to fly many places

I would hope some of those comments wouldn’t fly anywhere. Not sure what politics has to do with it.

When asked about Top prospect Rodriguez:

KM: Julio Rodríguez has got a personality bigger than all of you combined. He is loud, his English is not tremendous.
Why is this guy obsessed with speaking English well?

This is not the politics forum so I won't say too much about this, but I think your question has a clear and obvious answer.

It’s a shame it is now “political” to call an obvious racist what he is.

Not that this should need pointing out, but this has nothing to do with honesty and everything to do with trust.

The odds of a drawn out labor battle this off-season when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires increases by the day.
