    RIP Lawrence Ferlinghetti

    https://www.theguardian.com/books/20...-dies-aged-101

Not sure if anyone outside the area is very familiar with him, or if they are were aware he was still alive. I've lived in the Bay Area for decades now, but when i first moved here I didn't know City Lights from a hole in the wall, but being by myself I found comfort in a good book and a beer at Vesuvio's or Spec's. His heyday may have been long before i was around, but he will surely be missed by all that knew him.

I think he was the last major Beat writer still alive. Someone please correct me if I'm forgetting someone.

You could be correct, but I am not sure. Diane di Prima passed away late last year.

Always loved that book store and that part of town 30 some years ago. He was from the same stock as Herb Caen a real part of the old San Francisco

Gary Snyder is still alive, as is Hettie Jones.

When i read of Mr Ferlinghetti's passing the first thing I thought of was Herb Caen. Reading Caen was like an introduction to the city when I first got here. Still recall him saying something along the line of one good thing to come of the Loma Prieta earthquake was that it lead to the demolition of "The Dambarcadero" freeway. I have to admit that was a eyesore of a freeway in my opinion of course.

Gary Snyder the original "Dharma Bum".

I think I read some of his writings when I was in college in the early ‘70’s. I was trying to be a hipster. Read Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and the rest of the Beat writers. Roy was trying to make sense of the world.

Frankly, I didn’t know he was still alive. RIP sir.

    Riprap

    Lay down these words
    Before your mind like rocks.
    placed solid, by hands
    In choice of place, set
Before the body of the mind
    in space and time:
Solidity of bark, leaf, or wall
    riprap of things:
    Cobble of milky way.
    straying planets,
    These poems, people,
    lost ponies with
    Dragging saddles –
    and rocky sure-foot trails.
    The worlds like an endless
    four-dimensional
    Game of Go.
    ants and pebbles
In the thin loam, each rock a word
    a creek-washed stone
    Granite: ingrained
with torment of fire and weight
    Crystal and sediment linked hot
    all change, in thoughts,
    As well as things.

    Gary Snyder
