Always had a soft spot for Winker as he was first high end prospect I followed/was excited about when I started following the Reds. Was touted as Vottos replacement in the line up and after a few years is putting it all together. Great to see. Guy just hits.

He’s been even better the last calendar year or so, but I think it is worth noting that Winker was heavily platooned before last season and Votto was an everyday player pretty much right away.

Not necessarily saying that’s a knock on Winker, but I’m not giving him credit for being on the Joey Votto trajectory just yet.

And a lot of people were right. Not about Winker turning into Mike Hargrove or Hal Morris since his power was sapped due to injuries that, while not as constant as Senzel, had slowed his progress. They were right about how the state of the farm system was bad. It did not improve much either after that. It got worse actually. When you don’t sign much in FA up until last year then you only have the farm to back on. And Buckley was still churning out mostly bad drafts of Blandino/Farmer type hitters.

Jesse Winker is in his age 27 season. Votto's 1,113th PA came near the end of his age 25 season. So Winker is a year+ further into his prime than Votto was as well.

You’re right though. I forgot Farmer was. And turns out he’s still better than what most of Buckley drafted in the MI. Trahan. So many terrible hitting MI. And OF that made Jeff Jones and Paul Householder look like AS.
