If they don't pick up Miley's option, it's a five-alarm fire in that front office. It would signal cutting salary with zero interest in consequences or interest in winning games. If you can't stomach the salary, he's worth a legitimate prospect in a trade. It's no-brainer stuff.
Totally agreed. Miley's option is the first test of whether the Reds are serious about getting better in 2022.

I admit I was wrong about Miley too, especially after his injured 2020 season.

To me, there weren't any signs suggesting Miley had more in the tank. Was very wrong.

Hate to take the other side on this question, because I really like what Miley has brought to the team this year. And I won't be unhappy if they decide to pick up the option. But there are reasons to be skeptical and they are clearly evident in Miley's history. He will be 35 years old in 2022, to start with, but, more important, he has not very successfully put together good seasons in ones following seasons in which he has compiled the kinds of innings he has for the Reds this year. In 2016, when he was 29, he threw 166.1 innings, with a 5.37 ERA, then followed that in 2017, at 30, with 157.1 of 5.61 baseball. After that 157.1, he was only able to throw 80.2 in 2018, which he did with a good ERA of 2.57; then in 2019 he was able to amass innings again, 167.1 at 3.98, but then, as we know, in 2020, he made only 4 starts and threw 14.1 innings. This year he's thrown 163 at 3.37--terrific work! But a look at that overall pattern suggests you can expect a significant dropoff in ERA and innings pitched next year. There's a good case for picking up the option, to be sure, but there's also an argument to be made against it.

I was thinking the same thing, he also runs out of gas at the end of every August.

But my counter argument is...a 1 year deal is a really low risk deal for a starting pitcher who can do what he can do. There's always some risk but the level of risk is more than acceptable on a one year deal.

You don't get that on the open market.

There’s no reason not to pick up the option. There is valid reason to be slightly skeptical about Miley’s 2022 but if the Reds are concerned about that they can deal him for at least a decent little prospect.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

That's exactly where I'm at. They can either beg a SP to take a 1-year, $10M deal or they can just pick up Miley's option.

He's cheap and a LH Rick Reuschel type. He plays off the other types of pitchers they have too, gives a different look and the Reds need that. Now like a Rick Reuschel type it could be a gamble but 10 million is a good gamble in today's game for someone who can give you 20 quality starts

exactly. if they decline that option, we'll know they are not serious about winning. just like some of us knew when they gave away raisel for free last offseason. good teams don't do nonsense like that.
