Miley's signing was a joke and he should not be wasting roster space with this franchise.
"One problem with people who have no vices is that they're pretty sure to have some annoying virtues."
If Wade Miley ends up just being a 3 ERA relief arm for $7.5M that’s basically the best case scenario for Archie Bradley who many people were complaining we cut.
I still would not have signed him but $7.5M really isn’t making or breaking anything.

"Today was the byproduct of us thinking we can come back from anything." - Joey Votto after blowing a 10-1 lead and holding on for the 12-11 win on 8/25/2010.

If Miley can go 5 innings and keep his ERA under 5, I’ll consider it a success.
In past years, the Reds bullpen has been torpedoed by the like of Osvaldo Fernandez, Jimmy Haynes, Jose Acevedo and too many other gas cans to count.

Miley's signing was in keeping with the rest of what they did last off season. They found a veteran player who might be able to contribute and signed him to an expensive, but not atrocious contract. In retrospect It was a lot of things, but not really a joke.
3 of the last 5 seasons he's been pretty terrible, the thing is those other two years....he went roughly 19-8 in 240 innings with an ERA+ of 130. That's pretty good stuff right there and the reds can use all of that that they can get.
This is the expensive year of the contract. Miley is going to make 8 million and then most likely get another million to buy out next year escalation to 10 million, but you know who got 6 million this last off season? Anthony DeSclafani. It's the same deal. Oddly enough in the last 5 years DeSlafani has had two good years where he went.....roughly 18-14 in 290 innings with an ERA+ of 130. So Disco wasn't as good when he was good and he was less terrible when he was bad, but roughly the same pitcher as Miley. Of course Miley is a lefty and folks love that and starting pitchers get hurt. It's a rare team that has too many starting pitchers.
It's not a good contract, but it's not a joke.
Moustakas contract? That's a joke. after 2021 they have him for ANOTHER three years at 18 million per. That's a big old ouchie there.
"Even a bad day at the ballpark beats the snot out of most other good days. I'll take my scorecard and pencil and beer and hot dog and rage at the dips and cheer at the highs, but I'm not ever going to stop loving this game and this team and nobody will ever take that away from me." Roy Tucker October 2010

Ha, reminds me of something similar a poster once said about Edison Volquez in retrospect. It's like, um... who was the number one pitcher for the 2015 Royals?
People have funny expectations sometimes. I am not a big Miley fan, but for the bottom of the rotation he's fine. He would be the opening day starter for teams like the 2005 Reds.

yeah, beat me to it. moose signed a four-year deal, not a five-year deal. he will be a free agent after the 2023 season. in fact, moose, votto and castellanos will all come off the books after the 2023 season. the 2024 reds are going to go on a free-agent spending spree! lol.

Actually all of these guys have three more years and gone:
Votto, Joey
Castellanos, Nick
Moustakas, Mike
Gray, Sonny (counting option year)
Castillo, Luis
Winker, Jesse
Mahle, Tyler
Garrett, Amir
Ramirez, Noe
Before then are these players:
Miley, Wade
Akiyama, Shogo
Lorenzen, Michael
Barnhart, Tucker
Doolittle, Sean
In 2024 we have Suarez and then who? Way different team in 2024.
This year we see if tis core group can do anything. If they make the playoffs or come close, then we should go all in for the next two years. If we miss badly this year, it is time to sell off and start over.
