    Henry Darrow, R.I.P.

Henry Darrow died on March 14, 2021, age 87. You probably have to be a baby boomer to remember Darrow. He is most often recalled for his role as "Manolito Montoya" on TV's The High Chaparral, a western which ran for four seasons on NBC, starting in 1967. Darrow was also the first Hispanic actor to play "Zorro." He won an Emmy in the early 1980s for his role on a soap opera. He was very active in efforts to increase acting opportunities for Hispanic actors. A few years ago I read his autobiography, "Lightning in the Bottle." R.I.P.
"Hey...Dad. Wanna Have A Catch?" Kevin Costner in "Field Of Dreams."

Did he play Zorro before Guy Williams?

After, I think. In the eighties.

He was the original Montoya, though. No, not that one. I grew up watching him, but I never did figure out what a chaparral was.

    edit: Was Guy Williams hispanic?

It is on the whole probable that we continually dream, but that consciousness makes such a noise that we do not hear it. Carl Jung.

Wikipedia [yeah, I know it isn't an unimpeachable source] states that the parents of Guy Williams came from Sicily.

Chaparral is a shrub type plant found in the desert. In the first episode of The High Chaparral, the Cannon family start their new ranch, which John Cannon's wife Annalee names after the plant found near the ranch house. Annalee is subsequently killed and John Cannon eventually marries Victoria Montoya, sister of Manolito Montoya.

Probably correct, I had recently read about his name change and likely got his heritage wrong, probably mixed it up with that other secret Latino Ted Williams

It was a political marriage, much like the marriages among royalty and nobility in Europe. Victoria and Manolito's father, Don Sebastian, was a powerful rival rancher who had the ranch just across the border, so it consolidated power in that part of the Arizona Territory and northern Mexico, and protected both from the Apache threat led by Cochise.
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman. Damn glad to meet ya.
