Cincinnati Reds sign Venezuelan catching prospect Alfredo Duno

Though the concept of the Cincinnati Red signing big-time catching prospect Alfredo Duno has been out there for quite some time, today’s the day that concept becomes a reality. The annual international signing period for Major League clubs begins today, and reports from MLB Pipeline and MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez indicate the Reds have finally signed the now 17 year old catching phenom

Duno, who’s already 6’3” and 220 lbs, owns impressive pop with a still-developing bat, but runs very well for a catcher to go along with impressive glovework. That all comes with an arm that’s viewed very much as a plus tool, too, and that combo from a player who plays behind the plate is why he’s been ranked at (or near) the top of this entire international class.

Reds to land fourth-ranked int’l prospect Duno (sources)

There is a group of international scouts that views catcher Alfredo Duno as the top prospect on the market.

Count the Reds among that group.

According to industry sources, the club has agreed to a deal with Duno, the No. 4-ranked prospect on the international Top 50 Prospects list. The Reds, who have a base signing pool of $6,366,900, have not confirmed the agreement. The deal is pending a physical.

Why do scouts rave about Duno? The teen has a chance to have at least three above-average tools -- field, arm and power -- as he develops. He runs well for a catcher, and he already shows elite bat speed. There’s also a chance the righty will have plus power, and he projects to be an average hitter.

Duno, 17, is working on his swing mechanics and has some swing-and-miss tendencies because of his aggressive approach, but that’s common for teenage prospects. That said, he consistently barrels the ball and hits it hard.

On defense, he has the chance to be an elite defender because of his soft hands, flexibility and blocking skills. He can frame the ball well, shows good receiving skills and moves well laterally.

Duno has also been praised for his makeup. He trains with Angel Valladares, a member of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program, at the VIP Academy in the Dominican Republic.

Reds sign international free agent Christian Lopez

He’s a big, physical kid, listed at 6′ 2″ tall and 207 lbs. He’s got a chance to stick as a starter. Lopez has a low-effort delivery. His fastball is up to 88 MPH with good angle, and he has a chance to add more velocity as he continues to develop. The lefty has a breaking ball that works in the low-to-mid 70’s with depth. Both his fastball and breaking ball have high spin rates.

Jay Allen II was put on the IL, and Luis Chevalier has come up to take his spot. Chevalier came over from the Mariners in the Riley O'Brien trade.

Just reading more about that list. You don’t play but aren’t injured. Likely they want to work on his game outside of actual competition.

He's too good to release, but not good enough to earn regular PAs.
