The Reds signed Brandon Leibrandt to a minor league contract. The lefty had a great start in Indy ball this year. If Brent Suter becomes injured and/or Alex Young has a setback, I presume this is a bit of insurance, be it in AAA or MLB.

Draft-and-follow is a rule that allows teams to select high-school and JuCo players in the draft that are choosing to attend junior college, then sign them at any time before the following JuCo season ends (rather than having to sign them before the draft signing deadline, which last year was July 25th).

It also allows teams to sign players for 225k before it impacts their draft pools rather than the normal 100k, so it's helpful for both sides; teams gets to keep tabs on and signing rights for interesting high-school players while players get to sign for more than they would have otherwise.

I figured it was some sort of obscure rule like that. Thanks

Reds signed LHP Justus Sheffield to a minor league contract.

Sheffield was one of the top pitching prospects in baseball just a few years ago, but has completely fallen off the map. The 28-year-old former first-round pick hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2022 campaign and split last year between the Mariners and Braves at the Triple-A level, posting a bloated 7.63 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 60/46 K/BB ratio across 63 2/3 innings (24 appearances, 12 starts). He represents a relatively low-risk reclamation project for Cincinanti’s player development engine.

I was hoping for Sheffield in the 2014 draft (I think he was even linked to the Reds), but they went with Blandino two picks earlier (at 29).

I'd normally hold at some hope he could help (he's only 28), but those numbers look rough.

Interesting more is that the Reds now have a "development engine." I wonder if that's now the view around the league. If so, the Reds are really doing something right, now, compared to just a few years ago.

Phillips is headed to the ACL. That's probably worrisome, but I've been saying he has the walksies for well over a year. So, worrisome, yes, surprising, no.
