I see the Rays signed Franco as the #1 international FA in 2017 for less than $4mill. Isn't that less than what we gave to AlfRod? How does that work?

My contrarian hot take (and I may get flamed for this) is that the Reds spend too much on the major league roster.

They are close to the bottom of the league in revenue, but usually middle of the pack on ML payroll. That extra payroll comes from somewhere, and even I am not naive enough to think that comes from ownership.

So I wonder if they spend less on scouting, development, and analytics than even "thriftier" teams.

I may do some more digging later.

The next year Dibble was drafted and signed by the Reds. In Dibble's first year in the minors, he pitched 50.1 innings, walking more than he struck out 29-24.
