Last time Reds were 7-1 to open a season

With the victory yesterday, the 2021 Reds equal the 1994 Reds for a 6-1 start to a season.

This start is way beyond my Reds fandom (2010 - Mike Leake, 2015 - Alex Blandino), so my question is when was the last time the Reds were 7-1 to start a season?

1980 they were 9-0. Probably 1978 where they started fast and scored tons of runs in April.

Actually, in 1980 they started 8-0. In 1990 they started 9-0.

Right. The pitching was great too. I thought LaCoss and Pastore were finally the aces they needed and Leibrandt looked good too. Then reality hit by about mid May. They really beat up the Braves and Padres that year.

They got out to 7-3 in 2006 (they were 5-2 at this point). They were also 5-2 in 2004.

1987 is the last time they were 6-1. They got to 8-2 in their first 10.

It's a great start, sure, but remember that they went undefeated for the entire month of April last year.

To be fair. Dan was hitting 300 again into the season then Bob Shirley hit him in the hand. Happened twice that year. Messed up his swing. Geronimo and Morgan were bad after May. That year always sticks out in my mind when I realized the BRM was over.

Bowie Kuhn blocking the Vida Blue trade was the beginning of the end. He doesn’t protect his buddy O’Malley, and the Reds have Blue and Seaver at the top of the rotation.

But yeah, Howsam and Wagner believing free agency was a passing fad was the next biggest cause of the Reds decline.

If they'd been forward thinking, they could have had John Elway.

That 2006 season was a real bright spot during the lost decade. I know they came up short and didn't even make the playoffs, but they were in it until September and they had a magic about them. It felt like they were in it every game. Krivsky did quite a job with all of the dumpster diving he did with no budget.
