The Reds announced Wednesday that they’ve claimed lefty Phillip Diehl off waivers from the Rockies and optioned him to their alternate training site. Righty Michael Lorenzen was transferred to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. Lorenzen has been battling a shoulder strain, and manager David Bell recently told reporters that the right-hander’s recovery was “not going as fast as [Lorenzen] would like.”

So Lorenzen won't start this year. If Hoffman falters, Antone goes to the rotation (I suppose)

Bummer. Not a good sign for him contributing meaningful innings this year.

Didn’t realize it was a shoulder thing with Lorenzen. Jeez dude, idk if I’d count on him contributing much this season.

The tiny bit they've said about Lorenzen lately made me think this was coming.

No news is usually bad news when someone is on the IL.

That sucks, the guy works super hard on his body. I'm sure that's really frustrating and we could really use him in the bullpen.

Diehl grew up in Cincinnati and went to Moeller. He seems excited.

The #Reds today claimed off waivers from the Rockies and optioned to the alternate training site LHP Phillip Diehl. Diehl was born in Cincinnati and attended Moeller HS.

To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Michael Lorenzen (right shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day IL.
His mom is excited too. I could see her showing up here at some point.

Diehl started in Yankees system. He was traded to the Rockies but thought it was a prank at first.
    https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...kies-was-prank

When New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone called the slim 24-year-old lefty into his office Saturday afternoon and said the words, "We're trading you," Diehl thought his second-year skipper was playing some kind of sick prank on him.

After all, Diehl sort of felt like he deserved it. Earlier in the day, when the team barber had set up shop for pregame haircuts, the young relief pitcher had taken the spot of a more accomplished southpaw: 18-year veteran CC Sabathia.

"I had taken CC's spot in the barber's chair," Diehl said, grinning.

I guess it has to be asked: what's the Diehl with Lorenzen?
    Hope isn't a strategy

I would say we can forget Lorenzen as a starter. I can't see how he can be "stretched out" this year. At best he can contribute some innings out of the 'pen and he's a FA after this yr

They need to get Antone in the rotation ASAP.

I believe this is the problem - he put too much pressure on his tendons, ligaments and cartilage by getting buff. Of course, I could be 100% wrong, but he's the one on the 60 day dl and I can throw a 45 mile per hour fastball with absolutely no pain.

Who knows, you could be right. I don't follow him super close, but I have seen him doing flexibility and agility work on his social media stuff as well.

I wonder if that had anything to do with his 3.2 Inning appearance?
