I always like Bruce. He seemed to be a very good person. His hot and cold streaks would drive you crazy. But man, when he was on a hot streak he could carry a team. Bets of luck to him in his retirement and I hope stays in the game in some capacity.

veteran leadership and a fateful error in game 3 against the giants I forgot
I maybe I missed it, but why the mid-season retirement? Were the Yankees letting him go when Vogt gets back?
at least with frank robinson and bruce the reds extracted a lot of value while h e was here
but with EE, curt flood claude osteen mike cuellar, xharlie liebrandt, hal mcrae w milt wilcox, they got nothing if they trade AA his name will be on this list also
Looking at the Jay Bruce page on Baseball Reference, Jay earned over $100 million during career. Jay just turned 34 years old...

Incredible wealth. My neighbor and friend played 18 years in MLB, had career ave about 300, finished one year second in voting for MVP, played for Pirates, Expos, and Rangers to name a few, and is really a solid candidate for HOF...but he never earned a 1/8th of that amount. He retired in 80s.

He was the best player on earth for a few weeks every year and ended up being a pretty good player when you added in the weeks of zero production. I’ll always remember his first few games when he looked like he was going to be a superstar and the 2010 clincher home run.

It's weird that he just turned 34 this month and really hasn't been replacement level since 2017. Aged out quick. When Bruce first came up I thought he was going to be amazing. In the minors, and in his first few weeks in the bigs he would hit to all fields. Something changed, and he started trying to pull everything. Became a one dimensional hitter which made him very streaky.
Might just be as simple as "chicks love the longball and so did Jay".
