I'm going to assume the Reds are trying to lose if he gets another start.
They have a career minor leaguer and a guy they just picked up off the dung heap making starts. If Vlad is healthy, he'll probably start. Anybody they throw out there is going to be a garbage guy. At this point they just need warm bodies.

Wow I remember him helping me to finish 2nd in a fantasy baseball league last year. I guess the league's caught up to his tricks.

David Bell says Vladimir Gutierrez is heading to the bullpen. Connor Overton will stay in the rotation.

    Re: Vladimir Gutierrez

In each of his six starts for the Reds this season, Vladimir Gutierrez has been hit hard while struggling to command his pitches. On Friday, manager David Bell revealed that Gutierrez will be dropped from the rotation and be available as a reliever out of the bullpen.

“We told him we love having him on the team and know he can help us win games,” Bell said. “I’m [excited] to see him pitch out of the bullpen, but that does not mean this is a long-term decision. He could easily go back into the rotation.”

The decision came as the Reds have two off-days next week and lack the need for five starters. Connor Overton, who has a 1.59 ERA in his three starts since his April 30 promotion, will remain in the rotation and pitch on Tuesday vs. the Guardians. Tyler Mahle is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday.

“He could get multiple innings out of the bullpen also. We still have him as one of our best pitchers to be on our Major League roster,” Bell said of Gutierrez.

Gutierrez appreciated the chance to stay in the big leagues as a reliever rather than going to Triple-A Louisville to start.

“Obviously, I am grateful to him that he still believes in me,” Gutierrez said via translator Jorge Merlos. “He has a lot of confidence in me that I can still go out there and get the job done, whatever it may be. It’s nothing new for me. It’s what I did when I was back in Cuba for two years. I was a reliever. When I came here to Cincinnati is when I became a starter. It’s nothing new to me. I will be fine out there.”

Gutierrez, 26, had a more successful rookie year in 2021, when he went 9-6 with a 4.74 ERA in 22 starts and 114 innings.
In the offseason, he tried to make some adjustments to his slider, and they have not worked in games.

“I’m trying to throw it down and away, and those balls are just being hung over the middle of the plate,” Gutierrez said. “Also, my arm is a little bit tardy as well. It looks great in the bullpen sessions that we are doing with [pitching coach Derek Johnson], but out on the field, it’s just a very small, minimal thing I am doing wrong on the mound. [These are] things I still have to keep working on.”

Surprised nobody has gone back to this thread. Vlad Gutierrez threw the ball a ridiculous amount better today. I'm not sure what the way forward is here but it could get to be pretty interesting. He was repeatedly up at 96, and he really does have three pitches. I know he's been bad, but it's way too early, IMHO, to give up on him.

I saw 97 on the stadium readout, and was like "whoa." The other fun thing is that he was throwing that slider for strikes. If he can consistently have games like that, he will see success in the majors.

Gutierrez trusts his stuff, leads Reds to series win
    Will Aldrich, mlb.com
The second-year big leaguer delivered five innings of one-run ball on his way to earning his first win of the season (1-6) and propelling the Reds to a 3-2 victory in front of an impressive weekend crowd of 26,655 in Cincinnati.

His outing wasn't perfect, but the right-hander showed poise and confidence in his “stuff” on the mound, a difficult ask for a young pitcher when faced with adversity.

“We've been working so hard this year to get some good results, and sure enough, everything that we've done in the bullpen this past week, locating pitches, using all my pitches that I know I have a lot of confidence in … they all came true today,” Gutierrez said following the game through his translator.

The Giants threatened early and often throughout his outing, but he didn't break.

“I just couldn't lose focus right there with anything that was going on in the game,” Gutierrez said. “I wasn't going to let anything else from my previous starts affect what I was going to do today. So, I just told myself, ‘Let's go, Gutierrez. We got this.’”

“I was able to give 100% of my ability to [give] this team a victory,” he added. “I wasn't thinking about the six losses that I've had so far this year. I just knew that I had to get the job done today.”
