Stolen Bases Strike outs and other April things

Stolen Bases:

The Reds stole 5 bases in April (they were CS 5 times too!)

That's 12th worst in MLB history and the worst for the Reds (April with 900 Plus PAs

Thirty time the Reds have stolen less than 6 bases in the month of April (22 times between 1930-1958 when no one stole bases) but, this is the first time since 1969 they had that few, this Reds team also had the most PAs (by 157) over the second place 1969 Reds)

The most stole in one April?

1988 - 44

Side note: The Yankees only stole 4 themselves , 7th worst in MLB history (900 PAs)

Strikeouts:

In 998 PAs the Rangers struck out 285 times in April, the 6th most in MLB history for that month.

28.5% of the teams PA's resulted in a strike out

The Reds struck out 240 times, 4th worst in team history (2019 worst)

• That's 25% of the time they came to the plate.
• They only walked 79 times (24th all time)
• That's 8.2% of the Reds PA's

So that means the Reds came to the plate and 33% of the time the only damage the batter did was without his bat, raising the opponents pitch count and maybe obtain a base.

I found the 1969 reference shocking since it was the first season with the Reds for the only Red to lead the league in stolen bases since then. Bobby Tolan. But I checked and Bobby Tolan only had 2 stolen bases for the month of April and only 26 for the season. No wonder Dave Bristol was canned as Sparky Anderson obviously understood the benefit of the stolen base much better and Tolan led the league in Sparky's first season. And of course then Sparky got his hands on Joe Morgan and the rest is history.

At least the league OPS is almost 60 points higher than it was in 1968, largely because the home run rate is almost double. So the average team is scoring about one more run per game. But even that’s misleading because pretty much all of those additional runs come from home runs. Want to guess how often in baseball history we have seen a runs-per-game rate this low (4.25 per team) paired with home run rate this high (1.14 per team per game)?
