Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

    Games of Sunday, September 12:

The farmhands are making me choose today. There were two strong performances worthy of a macePOD, but since one came in a win and one in a loss, that's going to be the differentiator. That's good news for Randy Wynne, who becomes our player of the day. His strong performance (7 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 5 K) led Chattanooga to a 6-0 victory over Tennessee. After having an ERA over 7 in late July, he's really turned it around and cut more than two runs off of it since then.

Honorable mention goes to Jonathan Willems of Dayton (3-4, 2B, HR, R, 4 RBI, 2 SB). His grand slam put the Dragons up 5-1 in the 6th, only to have the bullpen give up six runs to Lake County the next inning and waste it. At least he has the honorable mention to show for his efforts.

    Best of the rest:

    Mike Freeman, Louisville: 2-3, BB

Hunter Greene, Louisville: 4 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 H, BB, 3 K (don't feel to bad for him about the unearned runs, they came on his own error on a wild pickoff throw to 1st, although he did successfully pick off a runner earlier)

    Zach Lee, Louisville: 3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K

Leonardo Rivas, Chattanooga: 3-4, 3B, BB

Chuckie Robinson, Chattanooga: 1-3, HR, BB, R, RBI

Miguel Hernandez, Chattanooga: 1-3, BB, R, RBI

TJ Hopkins, Chattanooga: 1-4, BB, R, RBI

    Matt Lloyd, Chattanooga: 1-3, 2 BB, R

    Jay Schuyler, Chattanooga: 2-3, RBI

    Miguel Figueroa, Chattanooga: IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K

    Juan Martinez, Dayton: 2-4, RBI

Matt McLain, Dayton: 1-4, BB, R, 2 SB

    James Proctor, Dayton: 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 4 BB, 6 K

    Brandon Leyton, Daytona: 3-5, 2 R

Jose Torres, Daytona: 2-3, BB, RBI

    Justice Thompson, Daytona: 2-4

    Rece Hinds, Daytona: 2-5

    Alberto Gonzalez, Daytona: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K, picked up the win in relief

    Scoreboard:

    Indianapolis 3, Louisville 0

    Chattanooga 6, Tennessee 0

    Lake County 7 Dayton 5

    Daytona 3, Jupiter 2

Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

It's another slow week on the top of the leaderboard. Rece Hinds is the highest ranked winner this week, picking up his 3rd macePOD. After just missing and picking up honorable mentions 3 times, Daniel Vellojin finally got his first main honor of the season. Unless there's any objections, I'm going to shut down the leaderboard and call the standings final after next week. That's the end of the season for everyone except the very top and bottom rungs, Louisville and the DSL Reds. Louisville actually has 10 more games to go afterward so there will be stuff to talk about here, but they're part of AAA's playoff that isn't really a playoff, not the regular season. Chattanooga and Dayton could make their playoffs, but they need help. Daytona is already eliminated from playoff contention. There are no playoffs at the ACL and DSL levels this year, not that it matters because the Reds weren't making either. Louisville and the DSL Reds will both play their final game October 3. And now on to the standings:

5-3: Graham Ashcraft, Allan Cerda, Hunter Greene
    5-2: Jose Barrero
    4-1: Francisco Urbaez
    4-0: Lorenzo Cedrola
    3-3: Alejo Lopez
3-2: Austin Hendrick, Rece Hinds, Reiver Sanmartin
    3-1: Bryce Bonnin, Bo Takahashi
    3-0: Nick Lodolo, Brian Rey
2-3: Elly De La Cruz, Carson Spiers
2-2: Noah Davis, James Marinan, Victor Ruiz, Robbie Tenerowicz
2-1: Wilson Garcia, TJ Hopkins, Jacob Hurtubise
2-0: Quin Cotton, Narciso Crook, TJ Friedl, Matt McLain, Drew Mount, Max Schrock
    1-3: Daniel Vellojin
1-2: Tyler Callihan, James Free, Danny Lantigua, Riley O'Brien
1-1: Mike Freeman, Ivan Johnson, Wendell Marrero, Quincy McAfee, James Proctor, Lyon Richardson, Leonardo Rivas, Christian Roa, Leonardo Seminati, Michael Siani, Gus Steiger, Michel Triana, Yoel Yanqui
1-0: Mariel Bautista, Connor Curlis, Nicky Delmonico, Juan Martinez, Dauri Moreta, Logan Morrison, Josh Osich, Chuckie Robinson, Braxton Roxby, Eduardo Salazar, Tony Santillan, Jose Torres, Case Williams, Randy Wynne
    0-3: Alex McGarry
0-2: Stevie Branche, Michael De Leon, Michael Mariot, Jason Parker, Ricky Salinas, Vincent Timpanelli
0-1: RJ Alaniz, Brantley Bell, Michael Byrne, Fidel Castro, Phillip Diehl, Blake Dunn, Brandon Finnegan, Carson Fulmer, Vladimir Gutierrez, Nick Hanson, Nick Howard, Ricky Karcher, Mark Kolozsvary, Evan Kravetz, Zach Lee, Diomar Lopez, Cionel Perez, Matt Pidich, Debby Santana, Jay Schuyler, Art Warren, Jonathan Willems

Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

    Games of Tuesday, September 14

macePOD: Joe Boyle, Daytona: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K. The strikeout numbers for the 2020 fifth-rounder out of Notre Dame will get your attention (41 Ks in 19.1 IP), but so will the control issues (14 BB, 2 HBP).

    Others of note:

Francisco Urbaez, Louisville: 2-6, 2B, RBI, R. Seems to be hitting better with the Bats than he did the Lookouts.

    Narciso Crook, Louisville: 3-5, 2 2B, RBI, R

    Jesse Winker, Louisville: 0-2, K

Mike Freeman, Louisville: 2-5, RBI, R

Alfredo Rodriguez, Louisville: 3-5, HR, 3 RBI, R

Michael DeLeon, Louisville: 2-5, RBI, R

Chris Okey, Louisville: 2-4, BB, R

    Reiver Sanmartin, Louisville: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K; 1-3, 2 RBI

Lorenzo Cedrola, Chattanooga: 2-4, HR, RBI, 2 R, BB

Robbie Tenerowicz, Chattanooga: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, R

TJ Hopkins, Chattanooga: 1-3, HR, RBI, R

    Brian Rey, Chattanooga: 2-4, 2B

    Graham Ashcraft, Chattanooga: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

    Michael Siani, Dayton: 1-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB

    Matt McLain, Dayton: 1-4, 2B, 4 RBI

Allan Cerda, Dayton: 2-4, HR, RBI, 2 R, BB

    Juan Martinez, Dayton: 3-3, 2 R, 2 BB

Jacob Hurtubise, Dayton: 1-1, 2 RBI, R, 3 BB, SB

    Christian Roa, Dayton: 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K

    Brandon Leyton, Daytona: 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, R

Rece Hinds, Daytona: 1-4, HR, 2 RBI, R

Elly De La Cruz, Daytona: 2-4

Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

    Games of Wednesday, September 15

The macePOD goes to the defensive-minded 2021 third-rounder who played DH last night and hit like a DH. Jose Torres, Tortuga: 2-5, 3B, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R. The shortstop is slugging .527 through his first 97 pro ABs.

Others of note on a night of a dramatic Chattanooga victory to keep the Lookouts alive in the playoff hunt:

Alejo Lopez, Bat: 2-4, BB, 2 R, SB

Alfredo Rodriguez, Bat: 2-5, RBI, R

Lorenzo Cedrola, Lookout: 3-4, RBI, R

    Robbie Tenerowicz, Lookout: 2-4, 2B, R

Matt Lloyd, Lookout: 2-4, RBI, R

    Ricky Salinas, Lookout: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K

    Matt McLain, Dragon: 2-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R

Ivan Johnson, Dragon: 1-3, RBI, 2 BB, R

    Jonathan Willems, Dragon: 2-5, R, 2 SB

Jacob Hurtubise, Dragon: 2-3, BB, R, SB

Stevie Branche, Dragon: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Opponents hitting just .142 against him across two levels this season. 98 Ks, 35 BBs in 56 IP.

Brandon Leyton, Tortuga: 2-4, RBI, BB, 2 R

    Rece Hinds, Tortuga: 2-4, 2 2B, R, SB

    Andrew Abbott, Tortuga: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K

    Tyler Garbee, Tortuga: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K

Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

    Games of Thursday, September 16

macePOD: James Marinan, Dayton: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K. A product of the Dylan Floro trade with the Dodgers a few years ago, Marinan was having a pedestrian-at-best season with the Tortugas but has been solid in two starts for Dayton. Obviously those walk numbers will haunt eventually.

    Others of note:

    TJ Friedl, Louisville: 2-4

    Alejo Lopez, Louisville: 2-4

    Zach Lee, Louisville: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K

    Wilson Garcia, Chattanooga: 2-4, 2B, R

Jay Schuyler, Chattanooga: 1-3, HR, 2 RBI, R

    Jacques Pucheu, Chattanooga: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Mariel Bautista, Dayton: 1-3, HR, 2 RBI, R

Reyney Reyes, Dayton: 1-3, HR, RBI, R

    Quin Cotton, Dayton: 1-3, 2B, BB, R

Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

    Games of 9/17:

At the beginning of this season, we were all, I suspect, extremely worried about the shortstop position. As the season closes, we're probably still not enamored with the major league production at the position, but there is hope on the horizon. Kyle Farmer actually showed he could be a defensive plus guy at the major league level. Jose Barrero smashed his way through AA and AAA and into the conversation as the starter in 2022. Ivan Johnson looks like a solid 800 bat who might be able to stick. Elly De La Cruz has come out of nowhere to more than hold his own at the low A level at age 19. The Reds also drafted Matt McLain as a true difference-maker in the first round. All the prospect prognosticators were overjoyed. As a result of these options, Jose Torres may get lost a bit. The former NC State star was drafted lower than McLain and didn't have the pedigree of the UCLA All-American. But he's shown plenty in his short time as a professional. In nearly 100 plate attempts at low A Daytona, Torres has gone .326/ .378/ .581/ .959. That's a 150 wRC+, fwiw. Add 6 SB, an *+ BB%, and a 17% K%. That's getting it done, folks. Last night, he went 4-5, with two doubles, a HR (his 5th), two runs, and three RBI. That production makes him the Mace Memorial Minor League Player of the Day.

    Honorable Mention:
Carson Spiers went five and allowed nary a run. He gave up only three hits, one walk, and K'ed five. Typically, that's enough to earn some sort of nod as doing his job remarkably well. Let today be no different. Spiers has had one heck of a season. He's moved two levels and has arguably improved in the tougher league. In his 20 starts in high A Dayton, Spiers has a 3.64 ERA with double digit Ks per 9 and gives up less than three walks in that same time. He's limiting league hitters to 7 hits/9, which is exceptional for a starter. At 23, he's a little old for the level, but not too bad. Next season will be the true proving ground. AA often chews up pitchers-- but I'm guardedly optimistic he's got a plan.

Others on a night when the Reds farm lost one more than it won:

    Beau Taylor: 2-2, 2 BB
Probably won't be back next season. Probably good for all involved.

Wilson Garcia: 2-5, HR, 3 RBI
Garcia hit his 18th HR on the season. If he were still a catcher, I'd be giving him consideration as a top 10 prospect. He's not.

    Matt Lloyd: 2-3
Double letters to end his first name and begin his last name. I'm guessing that's rare. A minor league career BA less than .240 is not.

Garrett Wolforth: 3-6, 3B, BB, RBI
Wolforth seems to have some power. He does not have much of a bat otherwise. He's shown some interesting numbers in small samples at High A. Enough to perhaps see what's there moving forward.

    Jacob Hurtubise: 2-2, 2 BB, 2 R
Hurtubise's had a strong first professional season. His .415 OBP is outstanding. His wheels are also outstanding. His power is virtually nonexistent. I'm guessing he's hoping to be on the Billy Hamilton track. I'd love to see more pop.

Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

    Games of Saturday, September 18

Mariel Bautista, Dayton: 2-4, HR, 3 RBI. Not much to choose from as Chattanooga was rained out and the Tortugas game was a bust, so we'll give the nod to "The Animal" Bautista for his fourth inning 3 run donger that helped carry our beloved Dragons to a victory. Once considered a pretty toolsy prospect Bautista is now mostly just an org guy, he turns 24 next month.

    In other action:

    Francisco Urbaez, Louisville: 1-4, 2B

Michael De Leon, Louisville: 3-4, 2 RBI

Alfredo Rodriguez, Louisville: 2-5, 2 RBI

Nick Howard, Louisville: 2 innings, 0 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, 0 runs

Michael Siani, Dayton: 1-3, BB, stolen base

Matt McLain, Dayton: 2-4, 2B, RBI. Just first rounder things.

Allan Cerda, Dayton: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI. The 21-year-old Bronx native is hitting a very impressive .274 /.361 /.534 in High A and has an .889 OPS overall on the year. Seems worth keeping an eye on.

Andy Fisher, Dayton: 2 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 0 runs.

Vincent Timpanelli, Dayton: 1 inning, 0 hits, walks, or runs, 2 strikeouts. Vincent, a Ramapo College grad, has a name similar to many of the people I grew up with in Northern NJ and has 76 strikeouts in 45.1 innings this season.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

    Games of Sunday, September 19:

Considering what an oddball minor league season this was, I suppose it's fitting that the final regular season macePOD goes to a first time winner who's a career .206 hitter with a .606 career OPS. Chris Okey saved the day for the Louisville Bats, hitting not one but two homers in their 8-7 win over the Memphis Redbirds. He finished with a line of 4-5, 2 HR, 3 R, 2 RBI. His 2nd homer of the day in the top of the 9th made the difference, putting them up 8-6 and providing what became the winning run.

There were plenty of good options for honorable mentions on a day the farm system went 3-0 (Chattanooga finished their season with back-to-back rainouts), so we'll pass one out to a player on each of the other winners. 3B Juan Martinez (2-4, 2B, HR, R, 3 RBI) paced the Dayton Dragons to a 5-3 over Ft. Wayne that gave them a share of the division title and the Dragons best record in 10 years at 65-55. His 3 run blast in the 6th made the difference. Unfortunately the stupid rules involving playoff teams this year screwed Dayton, but it's still a nice season.

Although he didn't get the win thanks to some shoddy bullpen work, Gabriel Aguilera pitched well enough for Daytona to earn one. He finishes his year with a solid 2.36 ERA across two levels thanks to line of 5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K as Daytona finished out the year getting back to .500 at 60-60.

    Best of the rest:

    Alejo Lopez, Louisville: 3-5, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI

    Francisco Urbaez, Louisville: 3-5, R

Michael De Leon, Louisville: 2-5, R

Narciso Crook, Louisville: 1-3, 2 BB, 2 RBI

Brantley Bell, Louisville: 0-5 (The hitting wasn't impressive, but getting two OF assists was. Oddly enough he nailed the same runner twice, once at third and once at home.)

Matt McLain, Dayton: 1-3, HR (inside the park version), BB, 2 R, 2 RBI

    Quin Cotton, Dayton: 2-4, SB

Jacob Hurtubise, Dayton: 1-4, R, SB

    Spencer Stockton, Dayton: 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 6 K, win in relief

    Pedro Garcia, Dayton: IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K

Jose Torres, Daytona: 3-5, R, RBI

Mike Trautwein, Daytona: 2-4, 2B, BB, RBI

Elly De La Cruz, Daytona: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI

    Rece Hinds, Daytona: 1-4, HBP, 2 R

Gus Steiger, Daytona: 1-4, 2 RBI in the 10th inning (what wound up being the winning run had actually scored before that on an error)

    Justice Thompson, Daytona: 1-5, R, 2 RBI

    Tyler Garbee, Daytona: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K

    Congrats to league leaders:

Phillip Diehl, Louisville: 53 games pitched

Lorenzo Cedrola, Chattanooga: .320 BA, 130 hits (teammate Wilson Garcia was second with 116)

Randy Wynne, Chattanooga: 8 wins (tied for league lead)

Graham Ashcraft, Chattanooga: 1 shutout (amazingly the only one in the league all year)

    Jacob Hurtubise, Dayton: .413 OBP

Eduardo Salazar, Dayton: 1 shutout (tied, one of only three all year)

Yerlin Confidan, ACL: 11 HR, .573 SLG

    Scoreboard:

    Louisville 8, Memphis 7

    Chattanooga --, Mississippi -- (cancelled)

    Dayton 5, Ft. Wayne 3

    Daytona 8, Palm Beach 5 (10)

Re: The 2021 mace Minor League Player of the Day Thread

Jose Torres had a torrid final week of the season, picking up a pair of macePODs to lead the week. At the very top of the leaderboard though, we got no clarity whatsoever because our front runners didn't do anything. Four players tied for the most PODs with 5, and breaking the tie by honorable mentions only removed one of them, so I present your co-macePOD Players of the Year: Graham Ashcraft, Allan Cerda and Hunter Greene. Jose Barrero just missed joining them by one honorable mention, though I'd imagine he's happier playing in Cincinnati than chasing internet awards in Louisville. The Most Honorable Man of the Year Award goes to Carson Spiers, who picked up his 4th honorable mention in the final week to lead all players. He had two PODs as well during a nice season with Daytona (8-4, 3.55). The Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride Award goes to Dayton 1B Alex McGarry, who was thrice named honorable mention without bringing home POD honors. The Nice Knowin' Ya Award goes to Bo Takahashi, who earned three PODs and an HM, but wasn't even with the organization by the end of the year. No word on if the posters at KiaTigersZone.com have named him Player of the Day yet after joining the Korean league. And this year's Invisible Man Award goes to Dauri Moreta. Yes he gave up two runs over the final week to pop his season ERA over 1.00, but all he did was put up a 1.35 ERA in Chattanooga, then top that by not giving up a run for over two months and going scoreless for his first 20 or so AAA appearances on his way to a 0.68 ERA for Louisville. That earned him a grand total of one macePOD, and even that came on a day where there wasn't much going on and somebody decided to reward him for his season-long excellence. Tough to make the highlights one inning at a time I guess. So here are the final regular season standings (Louisville does have 10 games remaining, but they're considered postseason games thanks to more minor league wackiness):

5-3: Graham Ashcraft, Allan Cerda, Hunter Greene
    5-2: Jose Barrero
    4-1: Francisco Urbaez
    4-0: Lorenzo Cedrola
    3-3: Alejo Lopez
3-2: Austin Hendrick, Rece Hinds, James Marinan, Reiver Sanmartin
    3-1: Bryce Bonnin, Bo Takahashi
3-0: Nick Lodolo, Brian Rey, Jose Torres
    2-4: Carson Spiers
    2-3: Elly De La Cruz
2-2: Noah Davis, Victor Ruiz, Robbie Tenerowicz
2-1: Wilson Garcia, TJ Hopkins, Jacob Hurtubise
2-0: Mariel Bautista, Quin Cotton, Narciso Crook, TJ Friedl, Matt McLain, Drew Mount, Max Schrock
    1-3: Daniel Vellojin
