You can always use a 1st Round pick on the best true college SS if you must.
That’s the problem with targeting Story. You have to fix SS again next year. You give up a huge haul to get him, and then you have to cough up another huge haul next year to replace him. Why not give up a huge haul one time and fix the SS position for the next 3-5 years?

But the main point is that the Rockies haven’t been that smart with it comes to trades lately.
The Reds and Rockies seem like a match made in Hell. They’ll each want the other to pay the salary. They’ll each want the young pre-arb players for themselves.

The Rockies will perhaps trade Story to a contender willing to pay his salary and give up young players.

The haul to get a 3-5 year replacement is going to be so much larger than a rental.

Maybe. We have no idea how Bob will be feeling mid season if the Reds are competitive and need a SS.

Two, three million for a solid reliever at the deadline, sure, I could see that if Reds are still in the race.
Then to reiterate my point, the owners should just sell the team. And why waste money on a reliever at that point, just sell what you can.

I’m not seeing why Senzel is more valuable than Stephenson at this point.

Both high first round draft picks, but one has stayed healthy and productive. It’s an easy call for me, if I had to choose.

We are now 153 games into Senzel’s career and he has -0.5 bWAR

Reds fans value Senzel more than anybody. Probably more than the actual Reds.

I’m agreeing with you. Sorry that wasn’t clear. Stephenson passed Senzel in value this year.

Exactly. But why keep bleeding the farm system to keep pursuing rentals? This is not the first year the team has needed a SS. They have been using rentals every year since Zack Cozart departed. Fix the position and move on to other needs.

Trade for him and give him a long term deal, positions fixed.

Reds won't make a trade unless they ink him to an extension, no one will, unless he's replacing an injured starter on a for sure team

The benefit to trading a B prospect every year is that you keep drafting B prospects every year. If you trade 2 A’s and a B you might not replace those A’s, those are the guys you know you want to keep.

Plus Jose Garcia will be ready soon. Probably next season.
