I could never bring myself to hate Pujols no matter how many Reds pitchers he destroyed. He just put his head down and let his play do his talking for him.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

I ground my teeth that the Cardinals dodged a major bullet and let Pujols go into free agency.
A very prudent and shrewd move, but since it was the Cards, I hate it.

From Axisa:
The Reds lost first baseman Joey Votto to a broken thumb Wednesday and he is expected to miss several weeks. Cincinnati could go with Alex Blandino, Kyle Farmer, or Mike Moustakas at first base, though none are ideal solutions (moving Moustakas to first would require moving Jonathan India or Nick Senzel to third, and open a hole elsewhere). Asking Pujols to play first base on an everyday basis at this point in his career isn't the best idea, but the Reds are an option.
The Enquirer's Bobby Nightengale wrote in 2019 that the Reds reportedly were the runner-up in Pujols' free agency sweepstakes in 2011.
"We thought we were going to get him," former Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told USA TODAY. "We thought he would certainly give our organization a lift with his presence, on and off the field."
Opinion: Albert Pujols wants to play, but his career may be over after being cut by Angels

Rosenthal's piece about it in The Athletic was really good.
The Angels sent out a news release at 11 a.m. PT announcing Pujols had been designated for assignment. They held a video news conference at 4 p.m. including Carpino, Minasian and manager Joe Maddon, but not Pujols. And then they played their regularly scheduled game against the Rays at 6:38 p.m.
No, the Angels did not even wait for an off day, prompting Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez to blast them on Twitter for the “shameful way” they treated Pujols and his legacy. Martinez was overly if understandably pointed in defending his fellow Dominican. But the end was not going to come easily if, as Carpino told reporters, Pujols wanted to continue playing every day at first base.
