There’s lots of good reasons, starting with the fact that he was not a very good pitcher, and that he was injured like all the time.

He seems to be a dang good pitcher right now. And, I guarantee you that over his Reds career, he was statistically an average to slightly above average MLB pitcher. Do we, as fans, expect all 5 guys in our rotation to be as good as deGrom? Even if you had him pegged as behind Gray, Castillo, Mahle, and Miley before the season, is Hoffman better than DeSclafani? Why do we have Hoffman and not DeSclafani. Why did we trade Cueto for a bunch of unproven talent that never proved?

The next 'shiny new thing' philosophy kills more rotations than it helps.

Is there a point where we can admit that it's not always the pitcher, but maybe the way the Reds organization develops, uses, and is willing to pay the pitcher that is the problem?

Why did we trade Cueto for a bunch of unproven talent that never proved?

Because he was going to be a free agent a couple months later, and the Reds gave Homer Bailey a whole bunch of money instead.

Cueto has averaged about 100 IP a year with the Giants since signing a six year contract and has averaged 16 starts a year, so it was probably good they didn't sign him, but damn I miss him.
