If you enjoy listening to an expert talk about pitching, you can't go wrong with the legendary 2002 Dick Pole intercourse.

First 162-game winning season since 2013. Yeah
Baby steps...

Yeah, I was expecting like 70 wins this season. The fact they teased us in August definitely makes the finish disappointing, but certainly not an embarrassing season. There was like a 1 month stretch where the reds were the best team in the NL.
What would you say.....ya do here?

Reds can finish in a tie IF Cardinals lose their last 6 and Reds win their last 5. Cardinals are due to lose. We are due to win.

Neagle, Harnish, Schrourek, David Wells, Guzman, Burba. His early 90s teams were quite good.
Once Allen and Lindner took over, the budget was gutted. No GM could compete with that budget.
So instead, Bowden focused on power hitters and good relievers and then just roll the dice on starters.. I'm not saying it was right or wrong, but that's what he chose to do.
He could have chosen to focus on starting pitching and neglect the lineup instead, but the result would have been similar.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

The Mets spent 103 days in first place, marking the most days in MLB history a team has been in first and finished with a losing record.
Now that's embarrassing

Perhaps it was incorrect of me, but I always assumed that Bowden listened to his manager (within reason) and pursued players/types of players the manager wanted.
When Davey Johnson was the manager....Bowden looked fricken brilliant.
When Ray Knight took over.....Bowden looked like a clown.
When Jack McKeon became the manager and sorted through what Knight had done.....Bowden went out and picked up Sean Casey, Greg Vaughn and Pete Harnisch....
When Bob Boone took over....Bowden looked like a clown.
Perhaps I'm mistaken in my assumption that there was a close working relationship between the gm and the manager at the time. It certainly doesn't appear to work that way NOW and that's not just the reds, that's everywhere.
"Even a bad day at the ballpark beats the snot out of most other good days. I'll take my scorecard and pencil and beer and hot dog and rage at the dips and cheer at the highs, but I'm not ever going to stop loving this game and this team and nobody will ever take that away from me." Roy Tucker October 2010
If the Cards had just been good (10-6) over the last 16, and not miraculous (16-0), we'd be tied. We didn't lose the 2nd Wild Card. The Cardinals won it, IMHO.
And I dislike the Cards worse than any other team, for what it is worth. But hats off to them for their late season run.
