Alejo Lopez AA 2B/3B hitting .429

Selected in the 27th round in 2015 this kid is quietly having a pretty good year at AA. .429 BA and 1.002 OPS. He's also been a solid contact hitter in his career hitting .303 with a .372 OPS although he doesn't hit for much power. Does not strike out much either with 162 career SO's in 1397 PA's. Not young but just turned 25.

No clue how good his D but here is a 2018 write up that Doug G did that suggests he has at least solid D. Career fielding percentage at 2B of .978 which isn't bad. For comparison BP had a career .988 and Jonathan India's MiLB was .971.

It's a great accomplishment. I wish that success for anyone who wants it, especially Lopez.

If things continue to go well, we might finally have someone on the roster that can play 2nd/3rd Base.

Things continue to go well. I want to know more about Lopez. Looking at what I do know, he's a little guy who is 25 years old, has never been highly regarded and most of his success is batting average driven. Basing this on nothing but an impression, I get a serious Norris Hopper without the speed vibe. He doesn't really fit any positions where the Reds have a need, but might be a better bench option than Mark Payton. He's certainly younger, more versatile, can switch hit and isn't as redundant with Shogo as Payton is.

Anybody with more detailed info, please share.

Being a bench player is tough enough as a veteran. This seems like the type of player who needs some regular starts to show anything. Of course you could say that about Payton too.

I know that in today's game, the conventional thought is that a player who can't hit for any power will be eaten up in the majors. Lopez may be the exception. He has a very low K rate over his career (11%) and this year he has walked more often than he has struck out. He's a true switch hitter. Prior to this year he moved slowly through the minors despite hitting well at each level. There's a lot to be said for a tough out in the leadoff spot. It sets the table and puts pressure on the pitcher. Does anyone have info on his defense? his speed?

Alejo Lopez didn't just appear out of nowhere. He is a career .306 hitter with a .378 OBP over 7 years in the minors. He just turned 25 too.

Continues to hit at AAA .403/.500/.629 which is better than he hit at AA this year.

Another thing I love about Lopez is he doesn't strike out much and walks a decent amount. 23 BB vs 16 SO this year. He also has some gap power as evidence by 17 doubles in 195 PA's. And he has a little speed to boot.

Online article about him today says he has more hits this year than anyone in the minors.

Unfortunately he has zero power and can't play SS.

I do want the Reds to add him to the 40 man at some point this year just to see if he can hit big league pitching though, I'll take a cheap bench 2B/3B who can get on base.
