Fangraphs Def ratings seem to agree with Gold Glove. Tucker has the highest rating on the Reds team. He also does pretty well in DRS.
Reds will probably just take the cheaper option. But it’s a mistake. They should do everything to nurture the young pitching. It would be well worth the money.

You’re saying two different things, though.
You’re talking about Barnhart’s defensive ability and “nurturing young pitchers” - those are two separate things. We even have pitchers on staff who have stated they prefer pitching to others over Barnhart. Gray preferred Casali as well.
What would you say.....ya do here?

Also, the pitching staff stinks on ice this year, so he’s really not doing much it seems…

Which catchers are preferred by Gray or other pitchers isn’t relevant to this issue.
Barnhart is a highly experienced, excellent defender. He knows the game backwards and forwards. He is highly skilled back there. That can only help these young guys, who are the team’s future.

When was the last time a team backed up the truck and dumped all (or even more than one) of their expensive contracts?
I think the defensive metrics also just measure things like throwing out runners, preventing passed balls, I think maybe pitch framing. I’m nearly certain they don’t measure things like game calling, which is really the only thing that would significantly matter to a rookie pitcher.
I value deep experience, knowledge, and defensive excellence in choosing the Reds’ catcher next year.
I see it as a key year in which the pitching staff will turn around.
Everyone wants to pick this apart but I find the concept to be pretty evident.
So we’ll have to agree to disagree. Reds likely won’t spend the money anyway.

Stephenson has minimal experience with Lodolo, Gutierrez and Greene as they never played on a minor league team together - 2 months of alternate site is it.
Santillan is the only one he has a lot of play with.
I think experience catching them has no play in the decision.
I hope that Moose get healthy and hot and he is traded. His signing may end up being Miltonesque when it’s all said and done.
When I see the 2016 Reds, I see a 100 loss team and no direction.
