June is when the 1999 squad turned the corner.
Of course they had Williamson, Sullivan and an actual good version of Danny Graves. This year's pen will not match that without some serious help from....without. There are no in house options.
It's been fun, but I hold no misconceptions about this team being able to hold it together with no pen, no shortstop, and statue esque defense.
Strange things can happen in Baseball but that feat would be just a bridge too far.

I’m shamelessly bumping this again. It was literally the night the Reds fell to a season-worst 22-28. They are 47-29 since.

nah... any combination of Hersh Freeman, Harvey Haddix, and Hal Jeffcoat would have done wonders for this year's pen.

Hal Jeffcoat could hit a little bit, too. Spent six years as an OF for the Cubs from 1948 to 1953 before transitioning to the mound. Hit 4 HR's for the Reds in 1957.

As I read back over this thread from the end of May, I saw the same folks dismissing the Reds' chances of beating out the Cards and Cubs now confidently stating the Brewers are clearly better than the Reds. I will respectfully hold on to my opinion that the Reds are better. lol
